Job Description
Reports To: Maintenance Facilitator
Hours:
Cleaning area 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
Lunchtime 7:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.
Cleaning area 7:30 p.m. – 11:00 p.m.
(Supervisor may change hours for special events)
Performance
The Custodian shall be evaluated annually based on goals and objectives composed and agreed to by the Maintenance Facilitator, Superintendent, and Southgate Academy.
Qualification Requirements

Education and Experience: High School diploma or general education degree (GED); six months to one-year related experience and training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Skills: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information one-on-one.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to add and subtract five-digit numbers and to multiply and/or measure volume and distance.

Reasoning Ability: Applying common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Other Skills and Abilities: May also be required to assist other personnel in performance learning, teaching, playing, and development.

Physical Demands: The physical demands described here represent those that an employee must meet to perform the essential functions of this job successfully. Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described here represent those the employee encounters while performing the job's essential functions. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions. While performing the job duties, the employee is regularly exposed to work near moving mechanical parts in highly precarious places and outside weather conditions. The noise level in the working environment is generally moderate.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Include the following (but not limited to) and may require other duties as needed.

Sweeps, mops, scrubs, and vacuums classrooms, hallways, and front entrances. Cleans, sanitizes, scrubs, and mops restroom areas.

Empties trash and garbage containers.

Notifies the Maintenance Facilitator of any item that might be deemed a safety hazard.

Notifies the Maintenance Facilitator of anyone trespassing on school property (as posted).

Cleans debris from sidewalk and front entrances.

Vacuums or dry mops classrooms as assigned by the Maintenance Facilitator.

Scrubs and disinfects the toilets and floors and cleans all fixtures and inside drinking fountains daily.

During holidays and breaks when school is not in session, cleaning will include walls, windows, ceilings, stripping and waxing floors, shampooing carpets, and detailing as required by the Maintenance Facilitator.

May be requested to operate at special functions/events/meetings at extended and various intervals. In this case, the Maintenance Facilitator will give 24-hour notice.
Summary
The main responsibility of the Custodian employee is to keep the school buildings clean and orderly by performing the essential duties listed above. Should an emergency arise, including suspicion of an intruder, the Custodian position is trusted to care for the school building and its possessions. The position may require being bonded.
