Morgan Park Academy has an opening for a School Counselor to join us for the 2024-25 school year. Founded in 1873, Morgan Park Academy is a co-educational, college preparatory, independent day school in Chicago dedicated to preparing students to pursue the highest levels of educational excellence with an emphasis on independent thinking and global leadership.The School Counselor will be responsible for supporting the health and wellness of students in grades PK-12, including direct counseling with students, guidance to parents and faculty in the support of their student, collaboration with outside providers, and teaching Character Education to grades K-5.
An ideal candidate should have at least a Bachelor’s degree and preferably a Masters degree in Social Work, Counseling, or Mental Health Counseling, a license in their respective field, a demonstrated love of working with children and teens, experience working in a school setting, excellent communication and organization skills, and a proven track record as a positive collaborator.
An ideal candidate would possess the following competencies:
- Excellent knowledge and practice of child development and counseling practices for children and adolescents
- Proven ability to work collaboratively as a team player, keeping the student’s needs/challenges/strengths at the center of every decision
- Demonstrated skill in working with parents, faculty, and staff in support of students
- Strong familiarity with health and wellness topics, along with the ability to communicate these topics in the classroom and to the parent community
- Effective knowledge of and comfortability with referral to outside providers and open communication with them to provide continuity of care
- Working knowledge of academic accommodation and neuropsychological testing
- Deep commitment to ethics both in privacy and in best clinical practices for students
Core areas of responsibility include:
- Develop and implement Character Education curriculum for grades K-5
Administer individual and small group counseling within a variety of age groups
- Create and implement assemblies on health and wellness topics as appropriate for each school division (Lower, Middle, Upper)
- Provide in-service training and presentations to faculty and staff on relevant topics as needed
- Collaborate with wellness team, student support team, teachers, and families to support students and address their needs
- Provide families with guidance and applicable referrals to outside services
- Help families and teachers navigate the neuropsychological evaluation process
