Job Summary:
The Cryogenic tractor trailer mechanic is responsible for basic repairs and maintenance of diesel-powered class 8 tractors and cryogenic semi-trailers to include PM inspections; tire and wheel maintenance; air brake systems; lighting repairs; cryogenic pumps; unloading valves and piping; diesel powered auxiliary engines; as well as ensuring that equipment is maintained to company and DOT compliant standards.
Essential Functions:
o Diagnose and maintain various unload piping and valves
o Diagnose and maintain diesel power auxiliary engines
o Diagnose and repair product metering systems
o Basic understand of various cryogenic trailers
- Tire and Wheel Maintenance
o Perform air pressure checks
o Check tread depth
o Identify tires that need to be changed or repaired
o Perform tire P.M. checks
o Replace tire and wheel assemblies
o Proper lube techniques
o Brake check/applied stroke
o Battery check
o Under vehicle check/loose components
o Fault code identification
o Identify components of air brake system
o Operate brakes and identify irregular noises, air leaks
o Perform simple air system tests
o Measure lining thickness
o Adjust brakes
o Identify, remove, & replace all brake-related defective components
o Measure drums, rotors, cam bushings
- Charging Systems (electrical)
o Visually inspect batteries, clean connections, check condition of belts, check alternator mounting and pulley, and replace and adjust belts
- Cranking System (electrical)
o Inspect and test and replace batteries
o Visually inspect cables and cranking motor
o Clean the battery cables, connections and starter
o Replace or repair defective cables
- Lighting System and Electrical Accessories
o Repair minor wiring problems
o Repair minor lighting problems
o Replace bulbs, lenses and simple light assemblies
o Install or replace accessories such as heated mirrors, fans, radios, CB’s, spotlights, electronic devices, etc.
o Check and adjust coolant levels
o Visually inspect system for leaks
o Make minor repairs such as hose replacements, fan shrouds, leaking fittings, etc.
o Recognize permanent antifreezes and their requirements
o Use refractometer
o Use pressure tester
o Inspect housings for leaks
o Change oil and filter, if required, and clean breathers
o Inspect and diagnose vibration issues
o Lubricate drive line
Skills and Education Requirements:
o Must have a valid driver’s license
o Ability to provide own basic hand tools (List available upon request)
o Basic computer skills
o Ability to read and comprehend service manuals
o Knowledge of tools and equipment used in the shop to repair and maintain company equipment
o A basic knowledge of tractor and trailer maintenance
o Knowledge of D.O.T. regulations and out-of-service parameters for tractors, trailers and accessorial equipment.
o Knowledge of proper procedures for handling and disposal of hazardous waste materials.
