Educational Field Instructor (“EFI”) JOB DESCRIPTION

REPORTS TO: Program Director or her/his designate (which may include temporary assignment to and direction from the Chief Operating Officer, Mobile STEM Discovery Lab Director, Property Manager, and/or Camp Host from time to time).
POSITION TERM: ☑ PT ◻ FT ☑ On-site.
Location: Camp Tontozona (Payson, AZ), Chauncey Ranch Camp (Mayer, AZ), and other locations throughout the state of Arizona, based on need.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The EFI assists the Program Director, Mobile STEM Discovery Lab (MSDL) Director, Property Manager, and Camp Host with teaching, supervision, and guest services at Camp Tontozona (CT), Chauncey Ranch
Camp (CR), as well as various locations at/for which MSDL programs are periodically contracted. This position’s main objective is to provide direct experiential education instruction and keep the camps focused on our mission and service culture. In addition, the EFI may assist in general cleaning and minor property maintenance. Under the direction of camp administration, the EFI is a generalist - floating between a wide variety of tasks and service to diverse populations, as needed.
Pathways to Learning (PTL) is a 501(c) 3 charitable organization that provides experiential education programs, curriculum, and services through various learning platforms. Chauncey Ranch is in Mayer,
Arizona, on 5,000 acres at the base of the Bradshaw Mountains. It has a strong legacy of serving as a residential outdoor facility for youth and families for over forty years. The Aqua Fria River divides this property. One side offers traditional, residential camp amenities; the other side offers a rustic, ranch experience with corrals, wrangler housing, and an historic ranch house. Camp Tontozona (CT) is a residential camp owned by Arizona State University and operated by PTL in accordance with a long- standing management agreement. It is in Payson, Arizona, surrounded by Tonto National Forest. This is also an Arizona legacy property having created many experiences for ASU students and faculty, youth from various nonprofits, youth in the foster system and many others. It features a $2.5M turf field which is used by ASU sports teams, as well as many high school bands and football teams.
Other learning platforms bring our curriculum directly to schools and organizations and include our
“Mobile STEM Discovery Lab,” “STEAM in a Backpack,” and “Ag. In a Bag.” PTL and its related entities’ keystone emphasis is Outdoor, STEM-Centered Education - having served over 30,000 students, 400 schools and 1,500 teachers.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
● Providing the highest standard of welcoming, guest services at both Camp Tontozona and Chauncey Ranch.
o Assisting camp administration in greeting and orienting guests, adult chaperones, and teachers upon arrival.
● Providing direct instruction to a wide variety of clients ranging from elementary students to adult corporate groups.
o Providing pre and post guest services including, but not limited to, cleaning, post- surveys, etc.
o Assisting in facilitating all program activities and logistics.
● Ensuring the safety and well-being of students, adult chaperones, teachers, and staff. o Identifying, addressing and helping resolve problems that arise during programming, including those that deal with equipment, maintenance, transportation, first aid, emergencies, staff management, and scheduling.
● Remaining “on call” during weekends and overnights, as needed and when residential groups are present.
● Working as a team member to ensure the success of the programs and to create a positive work environment.
● Performing other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned.
Position Qualifications:
● Excellent aural and written language skills.
● Customer service focused, heart and passion for service.
● Eagerness to learn and take direction.
● Ability to effectively lead experiential educational modules and manage student behaviors.
● Ability to provide a positive and empathetic role model for youth.
● Ability to manage multiple priorities and adapt to changing environments.
● Experience providing timely and quality communications by phone, email, and in-person.
● Proficiency using computer software (e.g., Excel, Outlook, Word, Gmail, Google Docs, etc.).
● Effective analytical, reasoning, and problem-solving skills.
● Ability to deal with frequent change, delays, or unexpected events.
● Professional and mature manner, appearance, and communication.
● Experience with/knowledge of Outdoor Education, Environmental Education, and/or Trauma Informed Care preferred.
● Experience in camp setting and/or teaching preferred.
● Bachelor’s degree in any field - recreation, education, science or related field preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
● Ability to operate a computer and standard office equipment (e.g., computer keyboard, phones, calculator, copy machines, printers, etc.).
● Due to the unique nature of PTL’s physical environment, ability to ascend/descend stairs, ladders, and move safely over uneven terrain.
● Ability to sit or stand in a stationary position (i.e., at a desk, in an office environment) for extended periods of time.
● Ability to engage in vigorous physical activity for extended periods of time, both indoors and outside and in a wide range of temperatures and weather conditions.
● Ability to lift and move up to 75lbs (e.g., moving heavy equipment, building materials, etc.).
● Ability to effectively communicate aurally, in writing, over the phone, and through virtual telecommunications (e.g., Zoom, Google Meet, etc.).

Compensation:
● $150/day, if allowed by law (determination pending as of 9/11/23), the EFI position will be considered “exempt” from the FLSA overtime regulations and not entitled to overtime pay.
● $15/hour, if the above-mentioned exemption is disallowed by law. If paid hourly, the position shall be considered “non-exempt” from FLSA overtime regulations and subject to overtime pay.
● FREE shared housing at either CT or CR. Shared housing is assigned at the sole discretion of either the Program Director or Chief Operating Officer. It may, from time-to-time change with little to no notice. This offer of housing is subject to termination at any time, with or without cause, with or without notice, and does NOT create a landlord-tenant relationship and is exempt from any and all state or other landlord -tenant laws or regulations.
● FREE meals when guest meal services are also provided.
● $.655/mile reimbursement for pre-approved, company related travel.
Your employment with PTL and its affiliated entities is at will. This means your employment is for an indefinite period of time and it is subject to termination by you or PTL and its affiliated entities, with or without cause, with or without notice, and at any time. Nothing in this policy or any other policy of PTL and its affiliated entities shall be interpreted to be in conflict with or to eliminate or modify in any way, the at-will employment status of PTL and its affiliated entities’ employees.
The at-will employment status of an employee of PTL and its affiliated entities may be modified only in a written employment agreement which is signed by the CEO or COO.
