Position Summary
Coordinates the packaging of standard and non-standard products for shipment in accordance with government, customer and commercial standards.
Organizational Interrelationships
The Packaging Shipping Coordinator reports directly to the Materials Manager. The Packaging Shipping Coordinator interacts with secondary operations department personnel, as well as other manufacturing (CNC, grinding and tool room departments), quality assurance and engineering personnel. There is no regular customer or supplier contact.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
In addition to adhering to the policies of the company outlined in the PGM Employee Handbook, an individual serving in the capacity of Packaging Shipping Coordinator shall be consistently able to:
- Independently interface with division and operations management to plan, schedule and report on day-to-day shipping support for a wide variety of company products. Modifies schedules to respond to changing priorities.
- Interprets packaging data sheets, contractual guidelines and verbal direction to determine packaging/packing methods. Works with packaging engineer and appropriate department personnel to develop packaging guidelines for new or unusual requirements.
- Estimates necessary labor, materials and equipment to complete assignments. Interfaces with supervisor and production control personnel for projections regarding future shipments.
- Packs and packages products to ensure that products reach their designation damage free.
- Generates routing requests, Government Bills of Lading, commercial bills of lading, airbills, bar coded labels and all transportation-related documents. Ensures the timely processing of company documents and maintains accurate shipping department records, files and currier documents.
- Inspects packages for proper preparation and labeling and selects mode of transportation to meet required delivery dates.
- Conducts routine checks of materials, equipment and classified areas in use following prescribed procedures.
- Understand how to use elementary statistical tools for problem identification and analysis.
- Assist other department operators when required or directed.
- Perform any other assigned duties in accordance with instruction provided by the supervisor.

Education, Training and/or Experience
Requires a High School Diploma or its equivalent, packaging in a manufacturing environment, military/defense packaging knowledge is a plus; On-the-job training is provided as necessary.
Language Skills
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients and other employees.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to add, subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume and distance.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, verbal or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands or fingers, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to sit. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 15 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific visual abilities required for this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and an ability to monitor product visually.
Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, minimal exposure to extreme heat and vibrating machinery. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
