GI CLINICAL NURSE SPECIALIST
POSITION SUMMARY:
Provides nursing care by assessment, planning, treatment, and evaluation of the patient.
Provides safe, knowledgeable, compassionate, educative, individualized and goal directed
nursing care to patients and their families in the Center.
SUPERVISION:
Received: Clinical Director, Physicians
Given: Endoscopy Staff Assistant
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Graduate of a Professional School of Nursing.
2. Current state licensure as a Registered Nurse.
3. Current certification in basic CPR.
4. Evidence of continuing education.
5. Good command of the English language, both verbal and written.
6. Ability to work well with physicians, employees, patients, and others.
7. Required to take Advanced Cardiac Life Support Exam and maintain certification.*
8. Required to undergo post offer physical.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
1. Requires extensive mobility (walking and standing) while supervising.
2. Periodic pushing, pulling, and lifting of patients and/or equipment.
3. May have exposure to patients with communicable disease.
4. Blood and body fluids category I.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
A. Patient Care Management
1. Demonstrates knowledge of GI anatomy and endoscopy procedures and clinical
skills in providing nursing care to patients undergoing procedures (training provided).
2. Demonstrates knowledge of current medical and nursing diagnosis and the ability
to apply coordinated nursing care to patients for which they are responsible.
3. Is able to perform and document a nursing assessment.
4. Provides information and pertinent teaching to the patient and/or family as
ordered by the physician.
5. Is able to make and carry out appropriate actions regarding possible changes in
patient condition before, during and/or after a procedure.
6. Utilizes an interdisciplinary approach to meeting the physical, psychological,
sociological, and spiritual needs of the patient.
7. Directly administers nursing care, including medications and treatment, to
patients for which they are responsible.
8. Competent in the administration and monitoring of conscious sedation (training provided)
9. Competent in airway management and emergency intervention.
10. Assists Endoscopy Clinical Assistant in patient cart transfer as needed.
11. Cross training to set up, and clean endoscopy equipment.*
12. Maintains Center records as directed.

6. Participates in studies and committee assignments
7. Maintains confidentiality of all protected health information (PHI) according to
HIPAA regulations.
8. Acts as resource person or preceptor as designated
*Not required of limited part time staff
