The LAUSD Office of Outdoor and Environmental Education is currently seeking Science Camp Counselors (Substitute and Regular) to supervise elementary school students at Point Fermin Outdoor Education Center, an overnight marine science camp located in San Pedro for the 2024-2025 school year. Point Fermin serves LAUSD students from throughout greater Los Angeles.
Science Camp Counselors assist naturalists with educational programs in environmental education, natural science, and social emotional learning for elementary school students; campfire programs; models and counsels students in appropriate behavior; sleeps in cabins and supervises children during 3-day, 2-night shifts; and performs various manual duties related to center facilities, animals, trails, and supplies at an outdoor-education center and off-site locations. Point Fermin currently has openings for 1st, 2nd, and weekend shift substitute and regular camp counselors. 1st Shift is Mon-Weds, 2nd Shift is Weds-Fri, and weekend shift is Fri-Sun (see below)
Compensation / Benefits:
- Counselors work one 24-hour shift each week at $22.52 per hour ($540 per shift)
- Regular Weekend shift works one 24-hour shift at $24.29 per hour ($583 per shift)
- Substitute counselors receive paid training prior to being available on-call for shifts
- Paid training and ongoing access to LAUSD’s Professional Learning Network
Schedule:
- 1st Shift: Mon 9:00 AM to Weds 11:30 AM. 24 hours/week total with various breaks
- 2nd Shift: Weds 12:00 PM to Fri 1:00 PM. 24 hours/week total with various breaks
- Weekend shift: Fri 4:00 PM to Sun 1:00 PM. 24 hours/week total with various breaks
- Counselors spend Mon & Tues nights (1st shift), Weds & Thurs nights (2nd shift), or Fri & Sat nights (weekend shift) sleeping in/supervising student cabins, and essentially live on site during the 3-day shift.
- Program operates weekly throughout the school year (August through June), with the potential opportunity to continue over the summer and into the next school year.
Responsibilities:
- Supervise groups of up to 20 LAUSD elementary students during mealtimes, lessons, camp activities, off-site excursions, walks, overnights, and free time
- Assist Naturalists with environmental education lessons and outings
- Weekend Counselor leads environmental lessons and outings
- Model and counsel students in appropriate behavior
- Promote a positive team atmosphere
- Lead team building activities, games, crafts, songs and campfire skits
- Assist with unloading and/or loading of student luggage
Qualifications and Expectations:
- Enjoys working with children and has a sincere desire to make their science camp visit as exciting and as memorable as possible
- Minimum 18 years old and high school graduate
- Expectation to commit to working the entire school year (August-June)
- Comfortable with moderate walking
- Able to pass FBI and DOJ background check; and to be TB tested
- Experience working with children is helpful (teaching, coaching, mentoring, scouting, etc.)
- Concern for equity and diversity and creating a safe space for all
- Consistently performs with a high level of responsibility and integrity
- Must have consistent access to reliable transportation
