Position Summary
The Phlebotomist is responsible for collecting, ordering, and processing laboratory specimens; billing lab orders and performing clerical duties for Central Laboratory.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
· Accurate patient appointment scheduling.
· Accurate patient check in and demographic data entry in NextGen computer system.
· Collect acceptable specimens ordered by physicians for testing at Central Laboratory and/or other reference laboratories.
· Accurate specimen ordering and post collection management in lab computer and NextGen systems.
· Accurate billing of specimens collected.
· Review appropriate reports to ensure billing accuracy.
· Specimen reconciliation to ensure orders have been resulted to Electronic Health Records (EHR) system.
· Waived specimen testing and reporting as appropriate.
· Process patient specimens for delivery to Central Laboratory or other laboratories as appropriate.
· Process specimens collected at other sites for delivery to Central Lab.
· Work effectively without daily supervision.
· Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
· Knowledge of laboratory techniques to perform routine laboratory tests.
· Knowledge of laboratory equipment and testing to operate, clean and sterilize.
· Knowledge of appropriate medical terminology to communicate with medical and laboratory staff.
· Skill in operating a variety of laboratory instrumentation and equipment.
· Skill in proper reporting of laboratory tests.
· Skill in communicating clearly with diverse publics.
· Skill in use of electronic medical record as appropriate.
· Skill in appropriately billing orders collected.
· Ability to work scheduled hours as defined in the job offer.
· Ability to work in multiple computer systems effectively.
· Ability to establish/maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and the public.
· Ability to read and understand oral and written instructions and follow written protocols.
· Ability to work independently.
Education / Training / Requirements
· Certified Medical Assistant (CMA, CCMA, NRCMA, CCMA, or RMA) or Certified Phlebotomist.
· Prior phlebotomy experience required. Minimum 6 months.
Physical Demands
· Ability to stand and walk for periods of time.
· Ability to sit for extended periods of time.
· Ability to climb or balance for limited periods of time.
· Ability to occasionally reach, bend, stoop and lift up to 30 lbs. *
· Ability to grasp and hold up to 25 lbs.*
