About Hesed Academy:
Hesed Academy is a vibrant religious school serving K-7th grade students from around the Monterey Peninsula. With small class sizes of 10-15 students, we offer a nurturing environment divided into four classes: K/1, 2/3, 4/5, and 6/7. Our education program includes:
- Religious Curriculum: Comprehensive instruction of Jewish traditions, history, and values.
- Hebrew Instruction: Hebrew reading and language skills for 3rd-7th graders.
- Tefillah: Communal prayer sessions with our Rabbi and Cantor.
- Specialty Classes: Rotating sessions in cooking, music, art, storytelling, and games.
- B’nai Mitzvah Preparation: Personalized support for 6th and 7th graders
- Community Celebrations: Class shabbat dinners, assisting with I-HELP, Model Passover Seder, Purim Carnival, and more.

Job Summary:
Hesed Academy is seeking dedicated and passionate Lead Teachers for religious education and/or Hebrew classes. Our Lead Teachers are responsible for creating a positive and engaging learning environment, delivering well-prepared lessons, and fostering a sense of community among students. This role requires collaboration with the Education Director to develop and implement curriculum, as well as participation in meetings and professional development sessions.
Qualifications:
- Knowledge of Jewish religious traditions and/or “prayer book” Hebrew.
- Experience in teaching or working with children.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with teaching assistants and Hesed Academy staff.
- Commitment to Hesed Academy and Congregation Beth Israel’s mission and values.
Responsibilities:
Classroom Management
- Plan and deliver engaging and age-appropriate lessons that align with Hesed Academy's curriculum and values.
- Maintain a positive and respectful classroom environment.
- Address and manage student behavior in accordance with Hesed Academy's discipline policies.
Student Engagement
- Foster a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere for all students.
- Encourage active participation and engagement in classroom and specialist activities.
- Provide support and guidance to students as needed.
Preparation and Organization
- Prepare lesson plans, materials, and resources in advance.
- Ensure the classroom is set up and cleaned up before and after each session.
- Keep accurate records of student attendance and progress.
Collaboration and Communication
- Work collaboratively with Madrichim (teaching assistants), other lead teachers, and Hesed Academy staff.
- Maintain open and effective communication with Education Director and parents regarding student progress and any concerns.
- Read weekly emails and communications from Education Director and respond as needed.
- Attend and participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and school events as required.
