Manufacturing Engineer/R&D
Summary:
The Manufacturing Engineer/R&D works in the Machine Technology Department to actively work with Production to improve upon existing processes and design new processes. This position also coordinates future investment in new shop equipment. In addition to setting up and operating specific machine tools, this role works to prioritize functions and works as a driving force withing the company for developing new technology to help with the efficiency of the shop and overall production.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Analyzes written specifications, drawings, rough sketches, and verbal instructions to plan layout and determine sequence of operations
Evaluates experimental procedures and recommends changes and/or modifications for efficiency and adaptability to setup and production
Participates as a team member to evaluate returned customer products and recommends design or manufacturing method improvements
Leads the process of disposing of old equipment and coordinating the process of purchasing and the installation of new equipment
Prioritizes functions and operates as a driving force within the company for developing technology, sparking innovative ideas and methods, and demonstrating commitment to customers
Sets up and operates machine tools, lathes, milling machines, and grinders to machine parts to customer specifications
Fits and assembles parts to fabricate tools, mechanisms, and machines for development of prototypes
Selects material stock and lays out designs according to dimensions computed from drawings
Designs fixtures, tooling, and experimental parts to meet special engineering needs
Verifies conformance of parts to specifications using measuring instruments
Tests experimental models for such parts as development, standardization, and feasibility of design
Establishes procedures for fabricating new products using a variety of machines
Trains workers (when required) in setup and operation of machine tools
Leads the effort of assessing and dispositioning of 5S items
Qualifications:
Experience with methods of analysis for Cause/Corrective Action, Statistical Process Controls, DOE, PC based CAD
Education, skills and or experience will be evaluated on a case by case basis to assure qualification competency is met
Ability to draft reports
Possesses comprehensive understanding of all machine shop practices proficient level of expertise in CNC Machining, CNC Programming (Mastercam preferred), cutting tools, tooling fixtures, material utilization, and layout
Education/Experience:
Four-year degree in mechanical, industrial engineering or equivalent applicable machining experience

Intermediate computer skill aptitude with Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint and Excel, inventory management software, manufacturing software and database maintenance management software

While performing the duties of this job:
Employees are frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and machinery
Employees are occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals though all necessary PPE is provided
Employees are exposed to noise levels that are generally moderate; the office area is quiet, and some areas of the machine shop are loud
Employees may be exposed to non-toxic graphite dust, which is classified as a nuisance dust
Steel- or composite-toed boots, PPE and other protective safety wear will be required
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job employee will be:
Required to regularly stand
Required to frequently walk safely through the plant area
The employee is occasionally required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk or hear
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $30.00 - $45.00 per hour
Expected hours: 40 – 42 per week
