Job Overview:
Fast paced, lively bookstore seeks a passionate and knowledgeable Bookseller who is interested in a full time position that will start in July and last beyond the summer months. As a Bookseller, you will play a key role in providing excellent customer service and promoting our whole range of books and related products. This bookstore in the heart of a popular tourist destination is looking for a passionate reader who wants to help people find their next great read, while helping a historic independent business thrive. The Yankee Bookshop is very focused on customer service and experience, so being friendly and able to talk about books is a must. In addition to helping customers, every bookseller in our shop is expected to have a solid understanding of basic computer skills, alphabetizing and filing, and also be on top of keeping our bookstore clean & organized (dusting, polishing, etc.). This full time position in particular will also be responsible for opening and closing the store, and all of the related duties involved with those tasks.
We are looking for someone who is energetic, outgoing, capable of working alone and keeping busy but also good at working with others in sometimes close quarters. Opportunities for helping with events, social media, or other areas of the shop may arise based on interest. This position will be a consistent 32-40 hours per week, and compensation starts at $17/hour, possibly higher based on prior retail experience.
To be considered for this position, applicants must be available to work weekends and some holidays. Booksellers now must also be mindful and observant of statewide COVID-19 requirements.
Responsibilities:
- Provide exceptional customer service by greeting and assisting customers in finding their desired books or products
- Recommend books based on customer preferences and interests
- Process sales transactions accurately using our Point of Sale (POS) system
- Maintain a clean and organized store environment
- Assist with inventory management, including receiving and stocking merchandise
- Complete daily opening and closing duties when needed
- Stay up-to-date with new releases, bestsellers, and current literary trends
- Participate in store events such as book signings or author readings
Requirements:
- Strong sales skills with a proven track record in retail sales
- Strong cash handling skills
- Excellent verbal communication skills in English; fluency in other languages is a plus
- Passion for literature and a good knowledge of different genres and authors
- Ability to engage customers in meaningful conversations about books and related offerings
- Familiarity with Point of Sale (POS) systems or willingness to learn
- Strong organizational skills with attention to detail
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks simultaneously
Qualifications and Education Requirements:
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Basic computer skills (internet searching, Microsoft Office programs, email capability)
Physical and Environmental Requirements:
- Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
- Must be able to stand, walk, climb, bend, stoop or crouch while performing daily activities of the job.
- Must be able to use hands/arms to operate keyboard, telephone and for repetitive motion activities.
- Must be able to lift objects up to 60 lbs. with or without assistance.
- Must be able to look at a computer screen for long periods of time.
- Must be able to communicate using speech, sight, and sound with or without assistive device.
