Summary
A Poison Information Practitioner in Poison Information provides a full range of services from acting as a knowledge resource to the lay community in the event of a poisoning emergency to independently providing expert consultation to physicians by planning the optimum management of toxicologic problems. The Poison Information Practitioner has the responsibility for evaluating the toxic hazards and initiating appropriate management of toxicologic emergencies, potential rabies exposures, and other public health related problems presented by the lay public and healthcare professional callers. This position provides 24-hour clinical leadership, interacts with government emergency resources in organizing a response to toxic emergencies, reports all potential rabies exposures to Georgia Department of Public Health, and represents the poison center through community health programs. This position may facilitate the professional development and supervising of other poison center staff, house staff, medical/ pharmacy students, and other office health care professionals.
Qualifications:
Required:
Baccalaureate degree and/or degree in Pharmacy, Nursing, Medical Doctor degree or similar healthcare profession as defined for eligibility for certification by the American Association of Poison Control Centers
Training and experience within the medical health field as a pharmacist, nurse, or medical doctor.
Required: Medical, nursing or pharmacy licensure is not required for this position.
Preferred:
One (1) year (2,000 hours) of experience as a poison information provider or poison information specialist.
To be a certified as a Specialist in Poison Information (CSPI) by the America’s Poison Centers (examination required) within 5 years of employment as a SPI. Once certified, maintain certification as a certified Specialist in Poison Information (CSPI) by the America’s Poison Centers (re-examination required).
Knowledge of the toxicologic applications of human physiology, chemisty pharmacology, action of drug, chemical and biologic toxins, information resources and their appications, pertinent literature, medical terminology, systems of emergency management of the region.
Demonstrates flexibily and adaptability in staffing a 24-hour emergency telephone service. Participates in and provides continuous education requirements and quality initiative projects.
