Program: Intellectual Disability Services
Position: Registered Nurse
Reports to: Regional Director
Function:
The Registered Nurse is a program support personnel. This person is an integral member of the Interdisciplinary Team. The Registered Nurse reviews all service recipients’ medical/health status at least annually and prepares a Health Evaluation and Medication Update to their annual Service Plan meeting. The Registered Nurse also conducts regular nursing audits for programs under his/her supervision.
Know How:
The position requires a Nursing Degree and a valid Alabama nursing license. A minimum of one (1) year’s experience in Nursing is preferred. This position requires good verbal and written communication skills; the ability to work closely with other agency personnel and the medical community; knowledge of physical assessment and health problems of individuals with developmental disabilities; basic counseling techniques and knowledge of pharmacology, particularly psychotropic medications. A comprehensive understanding of the Nurse Delegation Program. Computer skills are required.
Principal Activities:
Evaluates physical condition of people/service recipients utilizing examinations of vital signs and body systems.
Obtains necessary information regarding people’s health in an accurate and thorough manner to determine appropriate referrals to treatment.
Completes all paperwork in a timely manner.
Incorporates health related items into service/support plans and assists in developing plan to achieve health related goals.
Monitor health related services provided to service recipients through observation, review of records and discussions
Visit facilities to complete Nursing audits.
Review medication administration records and count medications to assure accuracy of documentation.
Monitor service recipients’ diets to assure that nutritionally balanced meals are prepared.
Maintain current knowledge of physicians and health-related resources that may meet the health needs of consumers.
Supervision of the LPNs.
Conduct necessary training as needed.
