MASTER MECHANIC HIRING INCENTIVE

$1,000 paid upon completion of a successful (passing evaluation) initial probationary period

$2,000 paid upon completion of a successful (passing evaluation) 1-year period
New hires who receive this incentive and voluntarily leave City employment on or before completion of six months’ employment shall repay the City the full $2,000 new hire (see repayment agreement).
New hires who receive this incentive and voluntarily leave City employment on or before completion of one year of employment shall repay the City the full $3,000 new hire (see repayment agreement).
JOB SUMMARY
Performs routine maintenance and repairs on all City-owned vehicles and equipment including automobiles, light, medium, and heavy-duty trucks, police pursuit vehicles, construction equipment, ambulances, and fire apparatus.
1. Performs routine preventative maintenance and state inspections on all vehicles and equipment.
2. Performs troubleshooting and accurate diagnosis of electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and computerized vehicle components.
3. Performs scheduled and unscheduled repairs to fleet vehicles and equipment while conforming to industry and federal standards.
4. Responds to roadside or field repairs as needed.
5. Test drives vehicles and operates equipment before and after repairs.
6. Performs accurate and detailed documentation of service and repairs utilizing computerized fleet maintenance software.
7. Assists in new vehicle and equipment check-in, up-fit, and decommissioning operations.
8. Interacts professionally and respectfully with the public, coworkers, and others in the course of daily work.
10. Utilizes good housekeeping practices to maintain the shop, work area, tools, and equipment in a safe and orderly manner.
11. Regular and timely attendance is required.
12. Performs other related work duties as assigned.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment, contribute as a team member, and treat others with respect.
- Ability to identify and resolve issues, use evidence-based decision-making skills, and follow policy processes and procedures.
- Skill in the use of computers, maintenance software, and other office equipment.
- Must have knowledge of repairs and troubleshooting of automotive, heavy truck, and construction equipment.
- Ability to use computer diagnostic equipment for automotive and diesel troubleshooting.
- Must be self-motivated with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Skill in operating shop tools and equipment while following safe practices and standard operating procedures.
- Ability to communicate and follow verbal and written instructions to complete tasks as assigned.
- Must have the ability to read and understand repair manuals, wiring schematics, and drawings to repair and maintain equipment according to manufacturer recommendations.
- Knowledge of proper disposal and handling procedures for used oils, chemicals, and other hazardous materials.
- Ability to work outside of normal business hours, weekends, or weekdays as needed and on a rotating on-call basis.
- Knowledge of component nomenclature and fluids used in the repair and servicing of vehicles and equipment.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Requires a minimum of five years of recent experience in the repair and service of automobiles and trucks.
Must have Auto/Light Truck Master ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certification, which requires successful completion of 8 exams (A1 thru A8) OR must have Medium/Heavy Duty Truck Master ASE certification, which requires successful completion of 6 exams (T2 thru T7).
If the Master ASE certification has not been obtained, one of the following requirements may substitute for the ASE requirement with a scheduled ASE training plan and achievement date within 24 months:
- Completion of a Diesel or Gasoline Technical program from an accredited school
- Expired Master ASE certification
- Military equivalent training to the pay grade of E-5 or above in a mechanical career field
Certifications must be maintained during term of employment.
Must have air brake training and obtain certification within (1) year of hire or promotion.
Must have the ability to obtain mobile A/C certification within (1) year of hire.
Must possess or obtain (within 24 months) one or more of the Emergency Vehicle Technician Certifications (EVT) F1 thru F8 or E0 thru E4. Certification(s) must be maintained during term of employment.
Must pass a Federal/National criminal background check.
Must have a valid Texas driver's license with an acceptable driving record as defined by City policy.
Ability to obtain a Class A or B CDL Texas driver's license within twelve months of hire or promotion.
Must have the ability to obtain a "Official State of Texas Vehicle Inspector" license within (1) year of hire or promotion or as directed by management.
Must pass a pre-employment basic physical, drug screen, functional assessment screening (Level 2), Titmus vision screening, Ishihara vision screening and an audio screening.
Must be able to work shift work, overtime and be subject to on-call as required.

Safety equipment such as gloves, goggles, hard hats, safety vests, steel-toe boots, back support belts, and seat belts are provided and must be worn as required by department procedures and good safety practices.
