The Department was founded in 2010 as a cross-campus program that spans the Denver and Anschutz Medical Campuses of the University of Colorado. Since its founding, the Department has grown rapidly across multiple areas and now houses an exceptional research funding portfolio, strong training programs including two T32 grants, and commitment to translating discoveries and inventions to the clinic as evidenced by the submission of over 150 patent applications and creation of 10 startup companies by Department faculty and students. The Department has its primary research and teaching facilities on the Anschutz Medical Campus, the largest academic medical campus between Chicago and the West Coast, which houses the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Pharmacy and the Graduate School, the Children’s Hospital of Colorado, the University of Colorado Hospital, and the Veteran’s Administration Hospital. Bioengineering faculty and students collaborate with all these groups; exceptional opportunities exist to further build and expand these collaborations.
