Legal Services for New Arrivals
NY’s Hudson Valley is experiencing an unprecedented increase in new arrivals in need of immigration legal services. Neighbors Link is building a team of creative and collaborative attorneys and paralegals to meet this demand. Position Description
We are seeking a full-time Paralegal/DOJ Accredited Representative to provide administrative support to our Community Law Practice staff. The ideal candidate will be interested in learning about all aspects of immigration law, community-based legal services and immigrant advocacy and will provide immigration services under attorney supervision, including consultations, application assistance, and necessary follow-up services. Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Key Responsibilities include but not limited to:
- Complete individualized assessment of immigration cases under the supervision of immigration attorneys and/or DOJ accredited representatives
- Conduct confidential legal consultations to ascertain eligibility for immigration benefits under the supervision of immigration attorneys and/or DOJ accredited representatives
- Complete immigration applications and petitions and compile supporting evidence under the supervision of immigration attorneys and/or DOJ accredited representatives
- Draft briefs, legal memorandum and other correspondence under the supervision of immigration attorneys and/or DOJ accredited representatives
- Stay abreast of changes in immigration law and policy including participating in trainings
- Track and manage all work in NLCLP date collection/management systems to meet all NLCLP program deliverables
- Assist in mail processing as needed
- Organize and conduct pro se clinics or other programs as needed
- Translate documents and interpret in client meetings both in person and virtually
- Conduct legal screenings on Legal Helpline and attend clinics as necessary
- Prepare and provide community education and Know Your Rights presentations via in person and virtual programming
- Represent Neighbors Link in meetings with partners and funders
- Other duties as assigned
Requirements:
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Proficient Spanish language skills
- Professional demeanor
- Ability and desire to earn partial DOJ accreditation
- Interest in immigration law
- Attention to detail in high volume position
- Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities
- Strong organizational and communication skills
