General Summary:
The Clinical Guidance Counselor will provide emotional support for all students. Consult with mental health concerns. Provide counseling and support for mental health concerns and advise students with problems with friends, parents, teachers, significant others, and any other student concerns.
Essential Functions:
- Responsible for overseeing the mental health of all adolescents who attend ChiArts.
- Provide students, and their families, with a safe supportive space which enables growth towards self-actualization.
- Provide counseling for students experiencing psychological distress.
- Assess students in a state of emotional crisis.
- Advise administration, faculty, and staff on issues relating to mental health as they pertain to student life in school.
- Consult with stakeholders: parents, guardians, staff, administration, faculty, community agencies, private providers, hospitals, etc. in order to meet student mental health needs.
- Organize programming, speakers, training, and professional development on campus for students and faculty regarding mental health and social-emotional growth.
- Refer students and families to outside mental health services when appropriate, assist with transitioning to and from such services, and coordinate care with outside providers. Services may include psychiatric evaluations, hospitalizations (inpatient / intensive outpatient), substance abuse programs, school refusal/avoidance programs, individual and family therapists, self-injury / self-harm support, and eating disorders treatment.
- Facilitate process and psycho-educational counseling groups for students based on the needs of the student population.
- Consult regularly with outside clinical therapists regarding challenging cases and how best to meet student needs.
Non-Essential Functions:
- Engage in professional development via training and conferences.
- Supervise counseling intern program.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities/Attributes:
- Master's degree in school counseling, other counseling or related field (e.g., social work or psychology), or an educational field
- Completed an Illinois program approved for the preparation of school counselors or a comparable, approved program in another state or country or hold a comparable certificate issued by another state or country
- Completed a supervised counseling practicum of at least 100 clock hours that provided interaction with individuals and groups of school age and included at least 40 hours of direct service work
- Demonstrated ability to interact with parents, students, faculty, and artists
- An understanding of the value of arts education
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Proven organizational skills
- Proven ability to work with a diverse population
- Current knowledge of educational technology and application
- Expert knowledge of the subject area
- High regard for student potential and an ability to provide opportunities for students to develop and succeed
