Legal Prep Charter Academy seeks an Assistant Dean of Culture to begin on August 5, 2024. Legal Prep Charter Academy (“Legal Prep”) is Chicago’s first and only legal-themed high school, putting diverse, low-income students on the path for college success. Legal Prep opened its doors on August 20, 2012 in West Garfield Park and began offering free, college preparatory education to students in a community with primarily low performing schools. Legal Prep is currently the highest rated high school in a two-mile radius and has over 70% of its alumni in college. Legal Prep will be in its thirteenth year of operation during the 2024-25 school year and enroll 250 students. As the name indicates, Legal Prep has a legal-themed curriculum and uses this unique theme to engage its diverse population of students in their learning and teach skills that will make our students successful in college and life. Legal Prep also works closely with the Chicago legal community to provide additional resources, exposure, and skills that complement our curriculum and promote analytical reasoning and critical thinking.
The Assistant Dean of Culture (“Dean”) is part of a team with overall responsibility for creating a positive, disciplined, and restorative school culture, assisting our teachers in maintaining an inspirational learning environment, and enforcing our student code of conduct in a way that supports the students’ social and emotional development. In this role, the Dean will work closely with the other members of the Culture team to create and utilize incentive systems for positive behaviors, self-discipline, and self-reflection in our students. The Dean will hold students accountable for their actions, encourage better behaviors, and provide trauma informed support when issuing consequences. The Dean will partner with teachers to help create a positive learning environment and engage parents around student successes and areas of improvement. The Dean will work alongside our Counseling Team to make sure students and families have all of the resources they need to be successful at Legal Prep.
Organizational development, program management, substitute teaching, and oversight of administrative duties are among the diverse skills needed for this position. In addition, the Dean should be a person of vision, high energy, initiative, creativity, and follow through. This position reports to the Director of Culture.
Responsibilities:
The Dean will participate in and contribute to a broad range of activities within the organization, including but not limited to the following:
- Assist in implementing building-wide positive incentive systems
- Participate in implementing building-wide behavior management systems
- Engage parents through email, phone calls, and home visits
- Support the Special Education department in implementing student IEP/BIPs
- Co-manage of arrival, dismissal, breakfast, lunch, and hallway passing periods to ensure order and safety during these times
- Escort students to and from class when requested by teacher.
- Monitor the students that have been removed from class due to off-task behaviors, are feeling ill and awaiting a parent pick up, or are otherwise not able to attend class
- Remove and separate students from situations that could lead to verbal or physical altercations
- Monitor and manage internal phone calls for escorts and support
- Greet visitors arriving to the school by sending visitors down to the main office, transferring phone calls to the correct personnel, and radioing other deans for needs/supports building-wide.
- Create and manage detention and suspension process, including student reflection, parent correspondence, and internal tracking and reporting
- Compile student behavior data for review and understanding of trends
Qualifications:
The qualified candidate for this position should have at minimum a Bachelor’s degree (this is not required). Additional qualifications include experience working in either a school, non-profit, or for-profit organization, with particular experience and interest in:
- Student development
- Program development and management
- Community engagement
- Community safety
- Behavior management systems, and
- Parent engagement
The qualified candidate should have superior organizational skills and the ability to develop a rapport with students and families. Other qualifications and experience should include:
- Commitment to the organization’s mission
- Experience with or in high need communities similar to West Garfield Park
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to apply principles and practices of behavior management
- Competence in a variety of computer applications, including word processing, databases, and spreadsheets
