Direct Support Professional-DSP
Job Qualifications: High School Diploma or GED; preferable experience in a residential
setting for the position desired. Drivers License preferred.
Reports To: The Program Manager and/or Assistant Program Manager
The Direct Support Professional-DSP is responsible for meeting the Individuals’ needs in the specific area of:
Skills Training and Development
Socialization
Counseling
Recreation and Leisure Time Activities
Utilization of Community Resources
Under the supervision of the Program Manager and members of the Interdisciplinary Team, the Direct Support Professional-DSP, is expected to work with the Individuals in accordance with their individual plans of care to carry out professionally developed activities, experiences or therapies in order to allow each Individual to obtain their functioning level.
Job Duties/Responsibilities
The Direct Support Professional-DSP, responsibilities pursuant to N.Y.S. Regulations include, but are not limited to the following:
- Serve as an advocate for the rights, needs, and wants of all of the individuals.
- Assists the management staff in procuring and maintaining essential support services for the Individuals, i.e. medical, vocational, etc.
- Assists the management staff in procuring all necessary medical care including the following
- Accompanying the Individuals to medical appointments and following established procedures to have pertinent medical information recorded.
- Insuring that all prescribed medication is obtained and administered according to established procedure.
- Maintaining appropriate and accurate medication records.
- Assists in maintain appropriate records including, but not limited to the following:
- Individual’s personal files, program plans, progress reports and data collection.
- Recording of events and incidents in accordance with departmental systems and established procedure.
- Observes and follows through on established emergency notification procedures in a manner which ensures the safety and welfare of all the Individuals at all times.
- Provides coverage in accordance with staffing schedules established by the Program Manager with the understanding that scheduling changes may be necessary in order to meet the needs of the Individuals and the Program. This may include mandatory overtime.
- Attends and successfully completes all necessary training programs as mandated by agency and regulatory requirements. Successfully complete AMAP, CPR/First Aid and SCIP Training within 6 months. Maintains adequate knowledge level in CPR and AMAP for recertification.
- Must maintain the care and use of supplies, equipment, etc. and maintain the appearance of the facility.
- Any other functions that the Program Manager/Supervisor may deem necessary for the health, safety and well being of the Individuals.
Skills Required:
1. Must be able to follow and carry out written and oral instructions.
2. Must be able to read, write and speak the English language in an understandable manner.
3. Must possess the ability to make independent decisions and handle stressful situations when circumstances warrant such action.
4. Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with the Individuals, Personnel, Family Members, Visitors, Government agencies and the General Public.
5. Must be willing to work harmoniously with professional and non-professional personnel.
6. Must have the ability to implement the programs, goals, objectives, policies, procedures, etc. of the Residential Services Department.
7. Must have the patience, enthusiasm and be able to handle the Individuals based on the level at which they are currently functioning.
