General Summary
The Public Safety Aide will perform a variety of tasks in support of law enforcement activities. Duties include handling calls for service and investigating incidents that do not require the presence of a sworn officer. This includes but is not limited to parking issues, minor traffic and private property collisions, traffic hazards, graffiti abatement, and found property reports.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by incumbents of this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.
- Answers questions to a variety of inquiries over the phone and in person, to provide information on policies, procedures, city codes, and laws.
- Provides education to the public in reference to crime prevention, safe neighborhoods, and other public safety concerns.
- Actively seeks and documents conditions contributing to chronic nuisances such as graffiti, structures in disrepair, dilapidated, abandoned and/or unsecured.
- Interviews victims, witnesses, and reporting parties to obtain information necessary to conduct a complete and thorough investigation and compile written police report.
- After compiling all necessary information from an incident, the employee will enter the detailed information into a computerized report writing program.
- Transports documents, property, and vehicles.
- Investigates and reports motor vehicle collisions, issues accident-related traffic citations, coordinates accident scenes, measures distances, makes calculations, draws diagrams, and testifies in court.
- Identifies illegally parked vehicles and properly completes written warnings or citations.
- Identifies and addresses illegal dumping on public and private property.
- Seeks and document potentially hazardous conditions on public property and relay such information to appropriate city departments for correction or repair.
- Works closely with the Police Department, Park Rangers, Animal Control and Code Enforcement on special projects or related tasks.
- Directs traffic in any type of weather condition.
- Visually identifies roadway hazards and determines a safe action to remove them, including disabled vehicles.
- Communicates effectively, professionally, and courteously with diverse groups of people, both verbally and in writing, often under stressful circumstances.
- Handles situations tactfully with citizens while demonstrating mutual respect for people at all levels.
- Corresponds with courts and completes warrant validations.
- Perform administrative duties as assigned and/or defined by the supervisor.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum and Preferred Entrance Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High School Diploma or GED
- Valid Arizona driver's license
PREFFERED QUALIFICATIONS
- One (1) year of experience with planning and zoning, building inspection, code compliance, animal control, law enforcement or related field.

Physical Demands & Environmental Characteristics
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The position is generally sedentary. The job requires prolonged periods of sitting, working on a computer, and performing administrative duties in an office environment. The person in this role may need to attend meetings or travel to other locations, which may require standing, walking, or driving for short periods of time. However, there is no requirement for significant physical exertion or demanding physical activity, and the position does not involve routine exposure to hazardous conditions or situations.
