The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is the largest provider of hands-on environmental conservation programs for youth and adults. Program participants protect and restore national parks, national forests, wildlife refuges, marine sanctuaries, cultural landmarks, community green spaces, and much more across the country.
SCA’s National Direct AmeriCorps program advances urban climate resilience by protecting, restoring and enhancing public lands and waters as well as natural, cultural, and historical resources across the United States. Service activities focus on projects identified as critical stewardship projects that improve and protect at-risk ecosystems and resources, especially in underserved urban communities.
Program Description:
This NPS/PLC project is to create internships for diverse, underserved, and underrepresented young individuals who will support interpretive programming at Tuskegee Institute (TUIN), Tuskegee Airmen (TUAI), and Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail (SEMO) to inform and educate all visitors who enter these park sites. Project work will include the offering of formal and informal programs such as guided activities, roving talks, Jr. Ranger Programs, and park orientations about the park’s natural, cultural, and historic resources and will be conducted at the park, and off-site within the community.
Performance Goals – To educate park visitors and provide opportunities for young people to learn about the nation's resources by spending time working on projects in National Parks to motivate them to become involved in the natural, cultural and /or historical resource protection of their communities and beyond resulting in shared environmental stewardship.
Assists with management of museum collections for Tuskegee Institute National Historic Site (TUIN), Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site (TUAI), and Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail (SEMO). The collections include cultural history, natural history, oral history, art, ethnography, archeology, and archives which are stored at a central curatorial facility, with some being stored and displayed at all two historic sites and one Trail. The intern will assist Museum Specialist with museum duties such as photographing, accessioning, and cataloging, assisting researchers, perform housekeeping and preservation activities, updating museum documents, and planning, and implementing storage improvements, conducting annual reporting, and documenting collections activities. The intern will read and follow all guidelines according to National Park Service Museum Handbook Standards I, II and III.
Location: Tuskegee Institute National Historic Site, Tuskegee, AL 36088
Key Responsibilities: Cultural Resource Intern photograph, accession, and catalogs museum artifacts for two historic sites and one NPS Trail.
Assist Museum Specialist with all museum collection inventory.
Monitors, controls, and maintains the environment for collections in The Oaks, George W. Carver Museum, Hanger I, Hanger II, Lowndes Interpretive Center and the Selma Interpretive Center.
Performs museum housekeeping for TUIN/TUAI/SEMO
Answer incoming and outgoing emails, telephone calls, and NPS staff questions, keeping a daily log of response.
Must have their own transportation to and from Tuskegee Institute National Historic Site and Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site.
Work Environment:
Cultural Resource Intern must be able to perform heavy lifting as well as reaching high areas for cleaning purposes.
