JOB DESCRIPTION
LICENSED PRACTICAL NURSE – SCHOOL BASED
Number of Positions: OPEN UNTIL FILLED
REPORTS TO: Works under the supervision of the Director of Health Services with support from the School Principal and
Assistant Superintendent of Schools.
SUMMARY: Licensed Practical Nurses will support the functions of the school health offices as well as act in support of individual students requiring nursing support to access daily curriculum. They will ensure the health and wellness of students in accordance with guidelines from the Department of Public Health and the Center for Disease Control. They will conduct various tasks as outlined in the student’s care plan and as assigned by the Director of Health Services.
DUTIES ASSOCIATED WITH THIS POSITION INCLUDE:
1. Provides emergency care in cases of injury or sudden illness. Such care will be limited to First Aid only, followed up by referral to the family physician or proper medical facility.
2. Maintains an accurate health record on each student.
3. Documents First Aid and illness care provided to staff and students. Completes accident reports and maintains an accurate log of health room activity.
4. Screens all new students to ensure compliance with immunization laws and makes recommendations for exclusion of students for lack of compliance to school administration.
5. Identifies students with health problems.
6. Organizes, implements, and reports on mandated health screening programs in assigned schools.
7. Recommends exclusion and monitors readmission to school for students with infectious or communicable diseases.
8. Maintains First Aid Supplies in an appropriate location in the school.
9. Makes appropriate referrals and follows-up on vision, hearing, and scoliosis screening failures.
10. Collaborates/cooperates with community providers and state agencies to meet the health and social service needs of students.
11. Acts as a resource to the student, parent, principal, and teachers in matters pertaining to health.
12. Identifies health and safety hazards in the school and advises school administration.
13. Demonstrates knowledge of, and the ability to administer medications appropriately, in keeping with school policy on administration of medication in school.
14. Other nursing duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
1. Graduate of a Practical Nursing Program approved by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.
2. Current license as a Practical Nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
3. 1 - 3 years experience in pediatrics, community health or related field.
4. Proficient in English.
5. Bilingual preferred.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
§ Ability to move in and out of office, classrooms, buildings, and up and down stairs.
§ Must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer
§ Strength to lift and carry materials weighing up to 20 pounds
§ Vision to read printed materials and a computer screen
§ Hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone§ Strength to lift and/or carry materials/items/persons weighing up to 75 pounds with assistance as the students may need positioning.§ Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent of Schools may find appropriate and acceptable.
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:
- Current authorization to work in the United States.
- Meets all mandated health screening requirements
- A record free of criminal violations that would prohibit public school employment.
- Adheres to the Code of Professional Conduct for School Employees
- Complies with drug-free workplace rules, board policies, and administrative guidelines/procedures.
- Ability to establish working relationships with co-workers and function as part of a cohesive team.
- Commitment to keep current with skills essential to the objectives of the position.
WORK YEAR: Full-time or Part-time (4 hours/Day Minimum), 182 Days/Annually, Salary in Accordance with the Lawrence
UFCW Local 1445 Licensed Practical Nurses and the Lawrence Public Schools.
