About Us: Arizona Advanced Surgery (AAS) is a leading multispecialty surgical group dedicated to providing exceptional care to patients in Mesa, Arizona and the surrounding region. We serve as the Trauma program (Trauma Surgeons and Physician Assistants) at Banner Desert Medical Center (BDMC) / Banner Children’s at Desert (BCD), Arizona’s third-largest city. BDMC/BC is a prestigious tertiary care hospital boasting over 700 licensed beds, with a significant portion dedicated to pediatric patients. As one of the two trauma centers in the Phoenix metro area capable of admitting both Adult and Pediatric trauma patients, we are committed to excellence in trauma care.
Position Overview: AAS is seeking a dynamic and experienced Medical Director to lead our Trauma Program. The Medical Director will provide strategic oversight and operational management to support the success of our trauma surgeons and physician assistants in covering the trauma, surgical critical care, and emergent general surgery. This pivotal role involves direct supervision of a lead physician assistant and overseeing all surgeons and physician assistants within the program.
Key Responsibilities:
· Manage the day-to-day operations of the Trauma Program, ensuring efficient and effective delivery of care.
· Lead projects, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, aimed at improving patient care outcomes and operational efficiencies within the Trauma Program
· Monitor and report on project progress and outcomes to key stakeholders, including hospital leadership, AAS administration, and regulatory agencies.
· Review trauma program financials to identify opportunities for improvement and ensure program sustainability.
· Oversee the trauma performance improvement process (PIPS) for the trauma program, including chairing the monthly Trauma PIPS and Peer Review Committee, the weekly Secondary PIPS meetings, and the day-to-day oversight of PIPS issues. This also includes leadership in the development of guidelines and improving processes of care, along with providing feedback and support as needed.
· Lead the recruitment and retention efforts for trauma program providers, ensuring adequate staffing levels to meet patient needs.
· Develop and maintain the trauma program schedule, optimizing provider coverage while adhering to regulatory requirements.
· Organize and host team-building events to foster a positive work environment and reinforce facility and company policies.
· Serve as a role model for providers, embodying the organization's culture, code of conduct, and value while fostering a culture of continuous improvement and learning.
· Provide leadership and direction in maintaining compliance with all regulatory and accreditation standards.
· Stay abreast of developments in trauma care and quality improvement methodologies, incorporating new knowledge and best practices into program initiatives.
· Required to provide hospital trauma surgery, surgical critical care, and emergency general surgery call for an average of 6 weekday shifts, plus 2 primary (in- house) call shifts and 2 backup (home) call shifts per month. Physician may be required to provide additional call coverage if necessary to ensure 24/7 in-house trauma center coverage.
· Participate in outreach education and meetings with EMS and referring hospitals.
· Work closely with the trauma team, other physicians, hospital staff, and hospital leadership related to coordination of trauma care, along with trauma educational efforts.
Qualifications:
· Medical degree from an accredited medical school.
· Board certification in General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care.
· Fellowship training in Trauma / Surgical Critical Care or Acute Care Surgery.
· Minimum of 3 years of experience in a trauma or acute care surgery program.
· Previous leadership experience in trauma or acute care surgery preferred.
· Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to effectively lead and motivate a diverse team.
· Demonstrated ability to analyze data and make informed decisions to drive program success.
· Commitment to fostering a culture of excellence, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
· Past leadership and/or involvement in performance improvement and patient safety programs.
· Meet criteria required by the American College of Surgeons for a Trauma Medical Director at the time of employment (or withing a time frame agreed upon with AAS).
