The North Florida/South Georgia Veterans Health System is recruiting for Registered Nurses to work in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) at the Malcom Randall VA Medical Centers. Come join our team of health care professionals in caring for our Veterans.
The SICU is a critical care unit specializing in the medical care of an array of post-surgical patients including, but not limited to, patients with neurological, pulmonary, endocrine, hematologic and cardiac disorders.
Experience with patient assessment and communication, IV therapy including continuous medication infusions, use of central lines and telemetry is preferred. Effective use of computerized medication administration and documentation is required. The Nursing Service department encourages individual and team accountability and shared decision-making while applying current Joint Commission standards using Evidenced Based practice.
Duties Include but not limited to:
- Uses expert clinical judgment in the delivery of critical care and managing life sustaining physiologic functions in unstable patients
- Organizes care delivery in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team in a manner that promotes continuity and accountability for patient care.
- Is innovative and self-directed in developing and implementing complex and unit programs/protocols for optimizing patient care and enhanced management of resources.
- Knowledgeable in care of patient with IV drips, use of blood and blood products, titration of cardioactive medications, ongoing cardiac and pulmonary monitoring, pain management and conscious sedation
- Knowledgeable and assists bedside procedures such as Swan-Ganz placement, Chest Tube placement, complex wound care, PEG and Trach, and Ventriculostomy
- Advance knowledge of normal and abnormal lab values and EKG interpretation
- Is skilled in providing cardiac and pulmonary support and frequent head to toe physical assessments on surgical patients
- Advanced critical thinking skills to intervene with appropriate actions for urgent/emergent care, as well as basic IV and central line skills
- Demonstrates positive communication skills and behaviors that promote cooperation and team work with internal and external customers.
- Mentors less experienced RN’s, other RNs in expanded roles, and/or students.
Work Schedule: 12 hours shifts in a 24/7 environment, day shift and night shifts available

Qualifications
Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-6 Nurse Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. The full performance level of this vacancy is Grade 03. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of 01 to 03.
Salary Determination: A salary determination tool will recommend the grade and salary paid to the person selected based on that person's qualifications.
Preferred Experience:
Surgical/Cardiothoracic ICU experience preferred
ACLS and BLS required.
Critical Care experience 2 year minimum preferred.
History of excellent collaborative relationships with physicians and support services.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Excellent interpersonal skills with demonstrated team building and problem solving skills.
Knowledgeable with electronic documentation system
Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Education: Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
Licensure: Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
