Position Overview
The Member Services Associate is the first point of contact for all visitors, members, and guests to the Museum of Wisconsin Art (MOWA) in West Bend, Wisconsin. The position provides a welcoming and friendly introduction to the overall museum experience. Daily functions include visitor engagement and membership sales as it relates to MOWA’s unique “everyone’s a member” philosophy. Daily communications surround museum activities, amenities, the history of the organization, and the museum as seen today; and promoting community services, attractions, and offerings.
This position with the Museum of Wisconsin Art allows an individual to apply talents, knowledge, skills, and interests while also allowing them to explore ideas and concepts, learn and grow, participate in the visual arts and museum culture, and experience various aspects of an organization as it applies to their personal interests and aspirations.
Essential Job Functions
· Engage at the main entrance by greeting, orienting, and aiding visitors, members, volunteers, guests, and staff
· Apply MOWA’s philosophy that “everyone is a member” to sell, renew, and upgrade memberships; promote activities, events, and the organization
· Open and close the front desk area; direct phone calls and questions appropriately; create and send daily attendance reports
· Assist MOWA Shop and security as needed; support projects in other museum departments; and assist with events (venue rentals, studio classes, MOWA events on-site or at satellite locations)
· Attend training and meetings as it relates to exhibitions, customer service, security, development, etc
· Use CRM system (Blackbaud’s Altru) to check-in visitors, sell memberships, and perform other museum-related and financial transactions
· Responds to emergency needs by communicating immediately with appropriate museum staff
· Perform other related duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
· Experience with point of sale/cash register, ticketing, or admission systems preferred
· Passionate and engaging customer service skills; willingness to learn and participate in all aspects of the organization; strong verbal communication skills; and ability to maintaining positive relationships with individuals, the community, and staff
· Experience in sales favored; maintaining positive transaction experiences; promote and encourage upgrades or renewals of memberships; ability to assess benefits of each scenario and encourage alternative options
· Ability to use discretion in security matters; to “think on your feet”, respond quickly with good judgement and mature reasoning/decision making; to diffuse negative situations with intentional language/best practices to secure a positive outcome
· Professional oral and written communication skills with the knowledge to speak and comprehend English
· Proficient computer skills using PC-based computers with Microsoft Office/Outlook products such as email, calendars, Word, Excel, etc
Education and Qualifications
· High School diploma (or GED) required. Associate or college degree preferred.
· Customer Service and sales with a point of sale/ cash handling work experience required with a Museum Visitor Service experience preferred
· Three years of experience in a service/sales position
· Art/museum education or interest in art museums encouraged
Physical Requirements
· Maintain a stationary standing or sitting position for extended periods of time
· Visual ability to recognize visitors, members, and staff and to read computer monitor or print materials
· Manual dexterity necessary to use keyboard/mouse, prepare or complete forms, and handle bills/coins
Schedule / Hours
This part-time position encompasses 5 to 20 hours weekly during normal weekday and weekend business hours (currently Wednesdays through Sundays, 9:30am–4:00pm) and may include after hour special events and functions.
