Welcome to the Main Operating Room at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center! Our goal is to provide you with the best possible information about our unit and the patients we serve. This will provide you with some information to address some common questions we hear from prospective staff.
Our patient population ranges from Pediatric to Geriatric and we provide services for the following specialties:
General surgery (including Bariatrics), Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, Robotics (Davinci Xi), Podiatry, Trauma Services, Urology, Vascular
Our Operating Room consist of 8 ORs, 2 cystoscopy rooms and sterile core with a staffing mix of Preop nurses, OR Circulating Nurses, Surgical Technologist, Nursing Assistants, Unit Secretaries, Resource Nurses, Clinical Educator, Sterile Core Coordinator and Patient Care Manager. Patients are managed through a collaborative effort between the Department of Anesthesia, which includes Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist and Anesthesiologist and the operating Surgeon. We work literally hand-in-hand with these individuals in planning and managing patient care to provide the best possible outcome for our patients.
We utilize Epic as our electronic medical record system, specifically the Optime segments.
We have the privilege of serving our patients 24 hours a day, every day of the year. The unit is staffed mostly with 8-hour and 13-hour shifts. We staff for 3 different shifts: days, evenings and nights and our call shifts are shorter than normal call shifts. We have full-time, half-time and per diem status to help meet the needs of the department. It has always been said the “OR is like a family” and that is the absolute truth. We pride ourselves in having a strong, united work family.
We have unit and hospital-based committees that support our projects and goals. Our care adheres to our hospital policies as well as the guidelines by the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Demonstrates positive interpersonal skills. Verbal and written skills required. Demonstrates effective organizational and leadership skills. Is knowledgeable of the age specific physiological, psychosocial, developmental and spiritual needs of the patients typically served.
Required Education, Licenses, and Certifications:
- Associate's Degree Nursing
Current licensure in North Carolina as a Registered Nurse or Compact state licensure.
Preferred Education, Licenses, and Certifications:
- Bachelor's Degree Nursing
- Diploma or Certificate Program Nursing
Other Information:Speech and auditory acuity for communication of patient needs. Visual acuity for observation of patients. Much standing, walking, bending and lifting. Position may involve skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parenteral contact with blood or other potentially infectious material.
