Position Responsibilities
The Medical Assistant is responsible for the performance of all duties relating to patient care processes in the Urology Clinic. The Medical Assistant must be able to communicate verbally in a clear and concise manner to personnel, patients and physicians. The position is task and detail oriented, with goal of providing quality patient care in relation to the patient’s prescribed diagnosis and treatment needs. The ability to provide documentation in electronic format is required. Travel required for coverage as needed.
Assessment and Documentation of New Patient/Consult

Review of patient history, inclusive of prior medical/surgical and urological history and thorough documentation completion, inclusive of assessment requirements in appropriate time frame

Review of available information obtained by other health care team members internal and external

Recognition of recent and prior diagnostic test results having relevance to patient current urological health history

Provide urological educational requirements of the urological patient under direction of physician, Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse
Assessment of Documentation of Established Patient

Review prior patient history and provide updated information in the medical record in an appropriate time frame

Review of available information obtained by other health care team members, internal and external

Provide urological educational requirements of the urological patient under direction of physician, Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse
Performance of nursing skills present in the urological clinic

Laboratory services of venipuncture, urinalysis, and knowledge of laboratory reference laboratory services and their requirements

Uroflow

Post Void Residual Testing

Intravesical Administration

Urinary Catheterization

Preparation and possible direct assistance of urological office procedures
- Urodynamic participation will be based on individual skills and clinic requirements

Vital signs

Medication Administration injections, intravesical, oral under direct supervision of physician
Medical Assistant Competencies

Communicate normal test results to patients

Handle incoming scanned documents/test results; forward to necessary personnel and document accordingly

Ability to cover triage messages in the event team lead is unavailable

Fill in house pharmacies prescriptions
Position Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent

Registered/Certified by accrediting program

Ability to speak, read, and write English

Ability to calculate basic math

Strong communication and interpersonal skills

Basic computer skills/knowledge and keyboarding skills

Ability to work independently or as a team

Must be able to multi-task, use critical thinking and problem solving skills and analyze complex data
Physical Requirements

Ability to stand, walk or sit for an extended period of time

Requires frequent bending, squatting, stooping or stretching

Ability to perform proper body mechanics and have the ability to assist patients in ambulating, transferring in and out of bed, chair or wheelchair

Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard

Ability to lift 0-15 pounds without assistance

Possess physical agility to respond in a quick manner and appropriately to respond to unexpected patient and family safety needs

Professional communication with patients, families, physicians and institutional departments to achieve optimal urological care delivery as directed

Assesses and anticipates patient and family response to urological treatment plan and provides for the necessary interventions

Provides for timely communication to patients, families, physicians, and other staff members

Recognizes and reports circumstances and situations not achieving patient/family satisfaction
Technology

Provide for documentation electronic environment following established protocols

Ensure responsibility of current passwords for required institutions and facilities

E-prescribe applicable patients under the direct supervision of physician and within Advanced Urology
Safety

Follow safety standards in all aspects of performance of the above essential functions

Follow standard precautions in the provision of patient care and implements other infection control measures as necessary

Utilizes equipment according to manufacturer’s recommendations and institutional policy

Reports/documents unexpected occurrences involving patients and others as appropriate

Follows facility specific emergency and disaster preparedness plans

The Medical Assistant performs duties related to assisting the physician in the overall care of the patient. These duties include but are not limited to rooming patients, taking histories, assisting with procedures, drawing blood, ordering supplies, and performing other clerical duties as times allows.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Administrative
-
Responds to phone calls for test results, medication refills, postop visits, scheduling appointments, etc.
-
Put patients in room, follows the initial intake process, and is available for instructions from the physician regarding the patient.

Schedules follow up appointments for nursing treatments.
Clinical
-
Collects urine samples, obtains medical history and notes in chart.
-
Takes vitals, BP, Temperature and Weight.
-
Checks that lab results, op reports, etc. are in chart.
-
Draws blood for labs as ordered by physician and process urinalysis.
-
Sends specimens to the laboratory with necessary, accurate paperwork.
-
Educates patient in catheter care, self-catheter, preparation for procedures, and injection as required.

Performs and/or schedules Phlebotomy as required.
-
Processes paper labs and imaging for physician review.
-
Ensures all equipment is in working order.
-
Keep appropriate logs regarding medications noting expiration dates.

Cleans, wraps and re-sterilizes equipment.
