Downstate Health Physicians represents the faculty of SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University, Brooklyn’s only academic medical center. The Department of Orthopaedics is looking for a Medical Assistant. The Medical Assistant serves as a member of the health team in the treatment and care of patients and assists with tasks to support the medical office. The Medical Assistant is responsible for assisting physicians in providing care to their patients. Their duties include recording and updating medical histories and contact information in patient files, scheduling patient appointments and performing standard care procedures like checking vitals, collecting lab samples or changing dressings. The incumbent should also have strong interpersonal skills so they can work with patients who may be in pain.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Greet and prepares the patients for physical examination
- Read and interpret physician orders
- Monitors patient flow in exam and waiting rooms
- Maintain clean examination room and equipment
- Communicate with patients requiring examination and procedures, and provide reassurance as necessary
- Completes all necessary forms in an accurate and timely manner i.e. referrals
- Restocks exam/treatment rooms and monitors inventories
- Supports clinical practice operations by providing cross coverage for a variety of administrative functions
- Maintain patient confidentiality at all times
- Must be customer service-oriented and maintain a professional appearance at all times.
- Knowledge of scheduling and medical terminology
- Excellent patient service, organizational and communications skills
- Ability to handle multiple tasks and to deal calmly with individuals under stress
- Demonstrates a positive attitude and ability to solve problems independently within the scope of responsibility
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- One (1) year work experience in private practice or hospital setting
- High School diploma, Medical Assistant Degree or equivalent required
- Basic computer skills including typing, knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and Athena EMR preferred
- Licensed Driver with car preferred
Per diem position, with the potential for full-time with benefits.
Pay: $18.00 - $20.00 per hour
Expected hours: No more than 37.5 per week
