Victims of Violence Intervention Program, operating Artemis House Shelter, is seeking a full-time (40 hrs/week) Shelter Advocate to join our team!
The Shelter Advocate will work closely with survivors of domestic and sexual violence who reside in shelter to gain access to resources and services needed to heal, recover and establish a successful life following violence. The shelter advocate primarily provides advocacy services to individuals who are currently staying in the Artemis House shelter.
Victims of Violence Intervention Program, best known for running Artemis House Shelter in Spearfish, is a non-profit organization serving people affected by domestic violence and sexual assault in Lawrence, Harding and Butte counties in South Dakota. VVIP staff is made up of committed people working together to end violence in all forms in our service area.

Required experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree. Human services or related field preferred.
- Valid driver’s license
- Preference will be given to candidates with knowledge of domestic violence and sexual assault issues
- Community resource knowledge
- Sensitivity and awareness of various local cultures of clients
- Ability to work effectively and efficiently with minimal supervision, attention to detail, strong organizational skills, able to perform duties with speed and accuracy, handle multiple tasks at once, work well under pressure, sound judgment and decision making skills, courteous and helpful, strong team player, maintain confidentiality.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite
Duties, Responsibilities and Expectations
1. Assist survivors of domestic violence in accessing any services or support they need to recover following an instance of violence. This may include:
- Assisting clients in accessing financial assistance.
- Assisting clients in navigating criminal justice & court proceedings, including obtaining protection orders.
- Providing emergency room advocacy for clients in need of medical attention.
- Identifying safe housing.
- Safety planning with clients.
- Transporting clients where needed.
- Connecting clients to outside services & community resources.
- Assisting clients in obtaining housing.
2. Assist with development and implementation of community education and awareness activities, with other staff.
3. Identify program needs, opportunities for employee training, volunteer recruitment, and communicate suggestions to Program Director.
4. Assist with shelter and on-site crisis work as deemed necessary. Plan and lead weekly shelter meeting with clients to include life skills and outside speakers.
5. Assist with client management, record keeping and other duties as assigned.
6. Assist with crisis line coverage on a rotating basis.
7. Maintain client confidentiality.
8. Report client services statistics to Program Director.
9. Assist with client management, record keeping, & other duties as assigned.
10. Promote positive VVIP public image.
11. Adhere to all policies and procedures set forth by the VVIP Board of Directors.
12. Must be able to submit to a background check.
This is a full time (40 hrs per week), non-exempt salaried position. Advocates are expected to be on call to attend to crisis intervention work at least one weekend per month and one night a week. Pay range will begin at $18.25/hr and increase dependent on experience/qualifications. Benefits include 100% paid health insurance, 15 days of paid time off per year, holiday pay (15 days), and 5 days sick leave.
