Counselor - Elementary School
Purpose Statement
The job of Counselor - Elementary School is done for the purpose of implementing the Missouri Comprehensive Guidance Program which focuses on four key components: implementing guidance curriculum, providing individual planning, offering responsive services, and providing system support; supporting students' academic progress by working with instructional staff to properly place and manage student placement; and collaborating and consulting with all stakeholders to provide developmentally appropriate information and recommendations for personal/social development, academic success, and college/career awareness and goal setting.
This job reports to Principal
Essential Functions
Assists teaching staff in their efforts to infuse specialized guidance curriculum and the Missouri
Connections curriculum for the purpose of assisting students with development of their Personal Plan of Study.
Collaborates and consults with teachers, administrators and other staff in building or district for the purpose of providing/receiving information and/or making recommendations regarding students' personal/social development, academic success, or college/career awareness and goal setting, as well as providing appropriate referral information when necessary.
Collaborates, consults and conferences with parents for the purpose of providing/receiving information and/or making recommendations regarding students' personal/social development, academic success, or college/career awareness and goal setting, as well as providing appropriate referral information when necessary.
Coordinates the MAP Grade Level Assessments and appropriate EOC exams in conjunction with building and district administration for the purpose of adhering to all ethical and standardized administration guidelines.
Coordinates, conducts and/or participates in activities for the purpose of contributing to the effectiveness of school programs and in meeting students' needs.
Develops and implements a variety of special programs for the purpose of providing relevant information, data, and research regarding students' personal/social development, academic success, or college/career awareness and goal setting in accordance with the building and district goals and objectives.
Evaluates and revises the school guidance program for the purpose of ensuring that the program is effective and compatible with the building and district goals and objectives.
Guides and counsels individual students and groups for the purpose of meeting developmental, educational and guidance needs.
Maintains a wide variety of correspondence and materials for the purpose of documenting and providing accurate accounting of activities and information.
Monitors students' progress for the purpose of identifying personal/social development needs, academic issues, or college/career awareness and goal setting progress and providing intervention to increase student success.
Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of school community.
Serves as liaison between home, school and appropriate community resources for the purpose of coordinating efforts to meet students' personal/social development needs, academic success, or college/career awareness and goal setting.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
SKILLS are required to perform multiple, technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: counseling skills; preparing and maintaining accurate records; planning and managing projects; and using pertinent software applications.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform algebra and/or geometry; review and interpret highly technical information, write technical materials, and/or speak persuasively to implement desired actions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific Knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: stages of child development; assessment instruments and techniques; counseling methods and trends; and methods of instruction and training.
ABILITY is required to schedule a significant number of activities, meetings, and/or events; often gather, collate, and/or classify data; and use basic, job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; analyze data utilizing a variety of complex processes; and operate equipment using defined methods. Ability is also required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with a variety of data; and utilize specific, job-related equipment. Independent problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires analysis based on organizational objectives; and problem solving with equipment is limited. Specific Ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating with diverse groups; maintaining confidentiality; meeting deadlines and schedules; setting priorities; working as part of a team; and working with frequent interruptions.

Work Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the jobs functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 40% sitting,
30% walking, and 30% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations. .
Experience: Job related experience within a specialized field is required.
Education: Masters degree in job-related area.
