Under the administrative direction of the City Administrator, this position serves to provide the
City of Kenosha a dynamic and creative Media Specialist to join our Communications and Public Relations team. The Media Specialist will play a key role in shaping and disseminating the City's message through various media channels, including press releases, social media, and other forms of digital content. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in media relations, social media management, and content creation, with a passion for public service and community engagement.
Press Releases and Media Relations:

Write, edit, and distribute press releases, media advisories, and statements.

Develop and maintain relationships with local and regional media outlets.

Serve as a primary point of contact for media inquiries.

Coordinate press conferences and media events.
Social Media Management:-
Develop and implement social media strategies to enhance the City’s online presence.

Create, curate, and manage published content (images, video, written) across social media platforms.

Monitor and respond to social media interactions in a timely and professional manner.

Analyze social media metrics to optimize content performance and engagement.
Content Creation:-
Produce high-quality content for various digital platforms, including the City's website, newsletters, and email campaigns.

Collaborate with other departments to gather information and create compelling stories that highlight City initiatives, events, and services.

Ensure all content aligns with the City’s brand voice and messaging guidelines.
Public Relations:-
Assist in developing and executing public relations campaigns to promote City programs and initiatives.

Monitor news coverage and provide analysis and reports to City leadership.

Identify opportunities for positive media coverage and community engagement.
Crisis Communication:-
Assist in the development and implementation of crisis communication plans.

Provide timely and accurate information to the public during emergencies.
Education, Training and Experience Requirements:
-
Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing, or a related field.

Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in media relations, social media management, and content creation.

Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills.

Proficiency in social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc.) and content management systems.

Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

Knowledge of the City of Kenosha and a passion for public service is a plus.
Preferred Skills:-
Experience with graphic design and multimedia software (Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, etc.).

Familiarity with Search Engine Optimization best practices and web analytics tools (Google Analytics).

Bilingual abilities, particularly in Spanish, are advantageous.
Work Environment:-
This position typically operates in an office environment but may require occasional travel to various City events and locations.

Must be available to work evenings or weekends as needed for special events or during emergencies.
Physical Requirements:-
Task involves some physical effort, i.e. some standing and walking, or frequent light lifting (5-10 pounds); or minimal dexterity in the use of fingers, limbs, or body in the operation of shop or office equipment.
