HUMANE SOCIETY OF SOUTH MISSISSIPPI: Foster Coordinator
Position Summary: Responsible for the non—traditional placement of animals and the temporary placement and monitoring of shelter animals into foster homes and rescues. Works in tandem with 2nd Foster Coordinator.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Must be a team player, able to work in a fast paced enviornment.
- Able to effectively manage multiple projects simultaneously. Excellent communication and leadership skills.
- Knowledge of animal breeds and behavior required.
- Vet Tech skills including vaccinations, preventions, x-rays, etc.
- Basic computer skills in Microsoft office and Google Suites.
- Able to deal with people in a positive way.

Qualifications:
- Minimum 2 year experience in veterinary clinic- with medical background preferred
- Minumum 3 years customer service experience.
- Must be 18 years or older.
- Ability to lift 50Ibs; able to stand, bend and perform duties as assigned.
- Quick to learn on a computer and with data entry.
- Previous Animal Shelter experience a plus!
- Willing to get euthanasia certified.
Responsibilities:
- Coordinate the transfer of animals into appropriate foster homes in accordance with the foster families skill level.
- Monitor the compliance with foster procedures to ensure that animals are receiving proper medical treatment.
- Ensure that fostered animals are being socialized properly and making progress.
- Maintain medical and behavioral records of animals in the foster program, monitor the progress of animals while in foster to ensure compliance with HSSM’s program guidelines.
- Schedules routine foster appointments and ensures the pet is receiving proper care from the foster parent.
- Schedules routine foster appointments and keeps the pet up to date on vaccinations/medications by giving vaccines, dewormer, flea medications, take home medications, etc when the pet is due.
- Maintains accurate PetPoint data for each animal.
- Assist foster families with scheduling medical and surgical appointments and ensure that appointments are kept.
- Respond to after-hour emergency medical situations, including euthanasia, and counseling.
- Maintain an inventory of animals that are out on foster ensuring the proper and timely disposition of fostered animals.
- Maintain an inventory of available foster families and communicate the availability of fosters to all departments.
- Conduct adoptions for fostered animals to the fostering families requesting permanent placement of the fostered animals.
- Coordinates and monitors the daily care of all animals assigned to the foster department.
- Examines all returning fostered animals to ensure the animal is appropriate to return to the shelter population and ready for adoption.
- Conducts regular training of foster volunteers regarding HSSM policy and procedures, in addition to health and behavior topics.
- Walks through the shelter daily to identify appropriate candidates for foster placement.
- Evaluates animals on the daily euthanasia list to determine their suitability for placement in foster, rescues, and transports. Signs the Authorization to Euthanize form as required by policy.
- Compile and report weekly stats for alternative placement of animals to the Director of Shelter Health in a timely manner.
- Participate in off —site events as necessary.
- Recruits new volunteers/fosters and utilizes nontraditional outlets to increase the live release rate for HSSM.
- Posts on social media to market animals available for foster.
- Back up for Vet Tech and Adoptions Teams.
- Is flexible with scheduling and is available when away from the facility as needed to meet the needs of the organization.
- Maintains a safe working environment in compliance with local, State and Osh requirements.
- Any other assignments necessary to accomplish the mission of HSSM.
General Expectations
- Promotes and follows safety guidelines to ensure a safe work environment. Takes immediate action to address any safety concern or noncompliance with OSHA safety rules that could put an employee, volunteer, customer animal, or HSSM at risk.
- Promotes the integration and engagement of volunteers.
- Promotes communication and cooperation between HSSM departments. Actively promotes the public image of HSSM.
- Actively solicits donations and promotes services available through HSSM. Willing to assist with the selection of animals for euthanasia.
- Communicates with the director of Operations on significant developments within the department.
- Ensures that policies and procedures are followed
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $11.00 - $15.00 per hour
Expected hours: No more than 40 per week
