School Nurse
REPORTS TO
Reports to and evaluated by the districtwide nursing supervisor.
PRIMARY FUNCTION
- Responsible for planning, implementing, coordinating, and evaluating school health services that maximize the quantity of in-class time by reducing the incidences of health related absenteeism.
- Eliminate or minimize health problems which impair learning.
- Promote the highest degree of independent functioning possible.
- Provide assessment, planning, intervention, evaluation, management and/or referrals to help meet the health care needs of students.
- Serve as a link between medical providers, families and community agencies to assure access and continuity of care for students.
- Provide relevant instruction, screening, counseling, and guidance to students, parents/guardians, staff, and others concerning health related issues.
QUALIFICATION PROFILE
CERTIFICATION / LICENSE
- Current license as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the State of Connecticut without restriction.
- Current CPR certification.
EDUCATION
Graduate of an accredited educational program for registered nurses.
EXPERIENCE
- Qualification for a school nurse as defined in Connecticut Education Regulations Section 10-212-2.
- Pediatric experience preferred.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES
- Collects information about the health status of students
- Performs health screenings for vision, scoliosis and hearing as required by state regulations and Board of
Education policy.
- Makes referrals to appropriate community agencies based on health screening results.
- Assesses students who are ill or injured; plans for and provides nursing care to those students.
- Evaluates nursing care provided. Based on evaluation, changes plan of care or initiates referrals to school staff or community agencies.
- Oversees medication administration and health care procedures for students.
- Develops an Individual Health Care Plan (IHCP) for students with special medical needs.
- Intervenes as guided by the Individual Health Care Plan to implement nursing actions that promote, maintain or restore health, prevent illness and effect rehabilitation.
- Collaborates with other professionals in planning health care to meet student needs during the school day.
- Participate in the Section 504 and PPT process to assist in planning for students with health care needs.
- Participates in and seeks out continuing education and professional development opportunities as required by state statutes and Board of Education policies.
- Provides instruction to school staff members in the Heimlich Maneuver, Blood Borne Pathogen training and emergency epinephrine administration.
- Provides training, direction and assistance to other employees with regard to providing care for students with health care needs.
- Functions independently without on-site supervision following all state, federal, and Board of Education guidelines, policies, procedures, and regulations. Works self-directed and clinically autonomous.
- Ability to lift and carry weight up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to walk, stand, and climb stairs and the mobility to carry out the school nurse responsibilities and duties as listed.
ESSENTIAL PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Adheres to all applicable professional safety standards and practices in the nursing field, including requirements set forth in the Connecticut Nurse Practice Act, federal and state laws, and Occupational Safety and Health regulations.
- Implements Board policies regarding the medical or health care of employees and students.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES
- Contributes to nursing and school health through innovations in theory; practice and participation in research, including narrative and statistical reports.
- Performs other related tasks as assigned by supervisors or other administrators.
- Provides emergency medical assessment to school district employees as requested.
- Ability to follow oral and written orders from supervisors, administrators, and medical providers.
- Ability to describe orally and in writing school health services provided, issues and concerns regarding school health.
- Ability to report work orally and in writing to supervisor as required.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, families, staff and others contacted in the course of work.
EQUIPMENT
Must be able to use appropriate office and job-related equipment.
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
Limited travel among schools when necessary.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
SALARY & BENEFITS
In accordance with Local 1186 contract.
