At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our diverse team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!
This role is part of the New Shepard program. New Shepard is a reusable suborbital rocket system designed to take astronauts and research payloads past the Kármán line – the internationally recognized boundary of space. Through operational reusability, New Shepard supports our mission of lowering the cost of access to space.
As part of a hardworking team of diverse engineers, you will craft, analyze, and verify guidance, navigation, and control (GN&C) software for spaceflight systems. In this role, you will build on our existing human-rated GN&C software to ensure the stability and robustness of the New Shepard vehicle. You will work on innovative ways to improve reliability and launch availability, enable new capabilities, and reduce operations and maintenance costs. You will have the opportunity to work hands-on testing and characterizing navigation sensors and hardware, including IMUs, GNSS receivers, and LIDAR sensors. You will also perform system analyses, including Monte Carlo simulations, to satisfy specifications and requirements and to drive system-level architectural decisions. You will ensure the safety and reliability of the system by authoring and performing Verification and Validation (V&V) tasks to ensure the software meets requirements and specifications. Our team is responsible for the full life-cycle of GN&C development, from design through to unit, hardware-in-the-loop, on-vehicle functionality, and flight testing. You will contribute to a sophisticated multi-degree of freedom aerospace simulation and test framework, and develop and maintain design descriptions and supporting documentation.
You should be comfortable working in a fast-paced and sometimes uncertain environment, supplying solutions, while demonstrating leadership, technical competence, and attention to detail. Passion for our mission and vision is required!
Minimum Qualifications:
-
B.S. degree in aerospace, mechanical, electrical engineering, physics, or related field
-
Knowledge in designing, modeling, testing, and flying aerospace GN&C systems
-
Proven knowledge of multi-body dynamics, flexible body dynamics, modern and classical control theory, linear stability theory, gas dynamics, and fluid slosh
-
Demonstrated knowledge of navigation sensors, including GNSS receivers, accelerometers, and gyroscopes
-
Proficient in MATLAB and Simulink
-
Excellent writing and verbal communication skills
-
Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to our inclusive culture
-
Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum
Preferred Qualifications
-
Software and model development expertise, including design, V&V, testing, and configuration control, with emphasis in C++, Python, and MATLAB/Simulink coding
-
Proven experience with safety-critical software development in aerospace, automotive, or other industries, such as DO-178
-
Experience anchoring/fitting first principles models to test data or high-fidelity external simulations using system identification or other numerical methods
-
Demonstrated experience with Monte Carlo simulation testing
-
Proven experience supporting flight testing or launch operations
-
Ability to continuously tackle risk and use Agile software development techniques
Compensation range for on site WA applicants is $84,727 - $118,618
Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the requisition is closed.
