Job Description: Animal Caretaker
Reports to: Shelter Manager
General Position Summary:
HIRING FOR DOG AND CAT POSITIONS. Animal Caretakers will provide daily feeding, cleaning and overall care of shelter animals as well as maintain shelter appearance and presentation. He/She/They will provide support to the Medical and Adoptions/Foster staff, as needed. The Animal Caretaker should maintain a welcoming, friendly and professional presence to all community members visiting the shelter and/or clinic. Qualified candidates for this position should be self-starters and team players.
Job Overview: Full-time or Part-time, non-exempt
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Perform routine housekeeping duties necessary for optimal cleanliness and sanitation of all animal quarters and other routine assignments to maintain the shelter appearance and presentation
- Ensure that all animals are fed, watered and exercised in the manner necessary to maintain optimal comfort and health
- Monitor all animals for signs of illness and/or behavioral issues and report any observations to appropriate staff
- Provide routine medical, hygiene and behavioral care as directed
- Support with adoption process as needed
- Maintain routine daily records, as required
- Restock supplies and report low inventory to appropriate staff
- Work with volunteers who assist with animal care and cleaning activities
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
Requirements and Qualifications:
- High School diploma or GED/HSE
- 1-2 years of experience in Shelter preferred
- Able to lift 30 lbs (dog food, cat litter, etc.)
- Frequent bending, reaching, kneeling, walking, and standing on feet for long hours per day while performing job functions
- Able to withstand exposure to the outdoor elements, as needed (rain, cold, etc)
- Able to handle disinfectant solutions
- Excellent attention to detail
- Ability to function and focus in a demanding and fast-paced environment
- Excellent verbal communication skills
- Collaborative team working style
- Demonstrate an attitude of consideration and courtesy to members of the public, co-workers, and volunteers
