Essential Functions:
Under the supervision of the Program Manager, the Counselor is responsible for screening and providing orientation for all new agency participants. The incumbent also conducts clinical evaluations, provides referrals, facilitates individual and/or group sessions.
Intake Counselor Responsibilities:
- Conduct alcohol and drug screens, and bio-psychosocial assessments on potential participants.
- Provide orientation of agency programs for new participants.
- Write clinical evaluations for participants when needed.
- Contact referral and collateral sources as needed.
- Attend agency and outside trainings for maintenance, enhancement of knowledge and skills.
- Maintain accurate records on participants served.
- Assign participants to group and schedule their first sessions.
- Make appropriate referrals for ineligible participants.
- Input appropriate data into computer system.
- Conduct individual sessions and/or counseling groups/intakes as necessary.
- Completes all necessary documentation for participants in services.
- Review and close cases as necessary.
- Monitor and update participants’ list.
- Adhere to professional standards of ethics.
- Ability to work at least two evenings per week.
- Participate in team meetings, and in agency fundraising efforts.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor
Intake Counselor Qualifications:
- Must have knowledge of standardized tests used to assess participants for alcohol and drug problem, and knowledge of DSM V criteria for abuse and dependence.
- Must have the clinical skills necessary to identify and assess problems related to or attributable to substance abuse/ dependence.
- Must have good oral and written communication skills.
- Basic knowledge of computer keyboard.
- Bilingual/ bicultural preferred (Spanish/ English).
- Must be sensitive and aware of current issues in the field of substance abuse.
- Must be culturally sensitive.
- Possession of valid Illinois driver’s license and willingness to use personal vehicle in course of employment.
- H.A.S. requires all staff to work onsite.
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Human Services or related field, from a regionally accredited educational institution which has U.S. Department of Education approval preferred.
- IODAPCA – CADC License required by due date
