Tooling Manager Job Description
Knowledge | Experience | Skills:
•Bachelor's Degree in a technical or business field or combination of education, skills, and experience.
•At least 5 years of tool and die manufacturing, extrusion tooling, or closely related industry experience in a technical, hands-on role. Journeyman Mold maker or Toolmaker experience (preferred)
•Knowledge of machine shop order of operations and manufacturing processes.
•Excellent written and verbal communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
•Strong computer skills including MS Word, Excel, Project, Teams, AutoCAD, and Inventor software are required.
•Strong leadership capabilities.
Position Summary
The Tooling Manager is responsible for overseeing the manufacturing, maintenance, improvement efforts, changeover standardization, and troubleshooting coordination of extrusion tooling, tools, and fixtures to include management of a tooling staff.
Accountabilities
•Ensure all tooling personnel and duties are conducted in a safe and controlled environment.
•Lead a team of Engineers, Supervisors, and hourly staff by setting and communicating clear expectations, managing performance, providing appropriate training and resources to safely and effectively perform their assignments.
•Provide technical support for efficient troubleshooting / problem solving activities and support to tooling repair team.
•Use effective problem-solving methodology to identify and solve true root causes for major tool or equipment failures as well as identification and resolution of repeat failures.
•Develop and implement preventive maintenance and predictive maintenance into tooling schedules and develop continuous improvement methods to support the shop equipment and the tooling program.
•Interprets and understands specifications, blueprints, and any other technical paperwork to determine quality standards with tooling tolerances, troubleshooting, and tool component improvement opportunities.
•Develop and manage supplier relationships as needed to manage costs and relationships.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
•Oversee and manage new tooling projects during the entire project life cycle from conception to site acceptance.
•Develop a project scope of work, assemble the project team, clearly define project deliverables, resource requirements, risks, and assumptions.
•Visit shop floor to communicate with team and visually verify task progress.
•Aggressively communicate project expectations and exceptions to team members and stakeholders.
•Capture and distribute project records including notes and related documents.
•Delegate tasks and responsibilities to appropriate personnel.
•Identify and resolve issues and conflicts within the project team.
•Identify and manage project dependencies and critical path requirements.
•Perform ongoing maintenance of project document archives.
•Lead and host meetings, events, and relevant activities in the office, or meeting environment.
•Demonstrate a strong sense of urgency and complete ownership of project success.
•Managing special projects as assigned.
