The preferred working location for this role is the Medtronic facility located in Mounds View, Minnesota; however, the individual may also work remotely within the US or onsite at another US-based Medtronic facility.

The Innovation Lab is an internal experience, design, and strategy consulting team at Medtronic. We use methods of empathy building and needs definition along with creative ideation and prototyping/testing to deliver economic value for Medtronic operating units globally.
As a Design Researcher on the Innovation Lab team, you will work alongside experienced designers, facilitators, and strategists. This role is to champion design research methodologies and support the team’s mission for Human Centered Design (HCD) in healthcare device design. You will lead research initiatives through a human-centered design process, guiding teams to frame design challenges, build empathy in end users, translate collected data into actionable insights. This role will support front-end exploration through activities such as: contextual observation, qualitative discussions with end users, and preliminary concept evaluation.
The role will collaborate with various R&D (Research and Development) and business functions on high impact initiatives to create innovative health care solutions that address the core needs of all our customers and users. The output of your work provides a fluid transition into continued development by building clarity of the higher-level purpose, vision, and value to the end user and Medtronic.

A DAY IN THE LIFE
- Scope research and HCD activities and deliverables with OU (Operating Unit) upstream marketing and technology leads.
- Develop design research strategies that explore conceptual use scenarios through contextual inquiry and observations.
- Collaborate with project teams to generate and optimize research materials such as: recruitment criteria and processes, screeners, interview stimuli, and discussion guides.
- Lead and execute research activities for multiple, concurrent projects in partnership with Medtronic OU teams in the field and/or provide guidance for execution.
- Synthesize data and generate research reports with emphasis on how the design research outcomes impact Medtronic business goals and end users experience.
- Communicate compelling stories and actionable insights that make research findings relevant to OU Project teams in various formats such as presentation decks, videos, posters, etc.
MUST HAVE (Minimum Qualifications)
- 4+ years of experience with a bachelor’s degree or 2+ years of experience with an advanced degree
NICE TO HAVE (Preferred Qualifications)
o 3+ years of experience conducting in-person and virtual research (e.g. market research, voice of customer, UX research, etc.).
o Detail oriented with strong project management skills including resource planning, project timelines, proposal generation, and budget management.
o Adept at identifying key trends, patterns, and correlations in customer data to uncover actionable insights that drive strategic decision-making and improve customer experience.
o Previous Medtronic experience
o Experience in healthcare or medical device industry; consulting experience.
o Ability to travel as needed, up to 25% of the time
- Degree in Marketing, Business, Psychology, Market Research, Design, Sociology, Anthropology, or related discipline
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite of products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
- Desire to make a significant impact on how people experience healthcare through elegantly designed interactions
- Curious, empathetic, creative and a continual learner.
- Self-motivated and proactive. Enjoys the benefit of working with a diverse and highly skilled team.
- Proficiency spans the entire research process, from defining the scope and methodologies, executing research activities, synthesizing qualitative and quantitative data sets, and communicating actionable insights to stakeholders.
- Demonstrate resourcefulness and creativity in problem solving with unconventional yet feasible ways to uncover insights when working with constrained resources, timelines, or other potential barriers.
- Skilled facilitator with strong interpersonal skills who loves creating a safe space for collaboration and breakthroughs. Ability to work cross-functionally and influence decision-making.
- Effective communication skills, proficiency in verbally and visually communicating insights, ideas, and concepts.
- Excellent analytical and synthesis skills (e.g. sense-making, pattern recognition, critical thinking).
- Working knowledge of research repository tools, e.g. Dovetail
- Skilled at managing complex research projects in complex and sometimes ambiguous cross-functional, matrixed environments
- Expertise with front-end stages of the product development lifecycle with specific fluency around customer and end user needs
