5th Grade Teacher at Durham Nativity School
Durham Nativity School seeks a passionate and innovative 5th-grade teacher (self-contained classroom) to join our dynamic team! This is a unique opportunity to develop and lead a comprehensive foundation program that ignites curiosity, fosters critical thinking, and prepares students for success in high school, college, and beyond. This individual will have an entrepreneurial spirit, as they will be creating the entire program from the ground up and connecting our school to all of the resources in the Triangle, including other schools, universities, and companies. In addition, the teacher should have a personal love for learning and a deep understanding of content to invoke critical thinking skills of the students creating a relevant, yet rigorous standard in the classroom.

Durham Nativity School is a tuition-free college preparatory middle school that empowers students from underserved families to achieve academic excellence and fulfill their leadership potential. We believe in the power of a strong foundation of skills to prepare students for the challenges and opportunities in their future education and careers. The school is intentionally designed to be learner-centered. Therefore the school and class sizes are both small. The 5th grade class size is between 10 - 14 students and the student body at capacity is 56.
About the Role:
The 5th Grade Teacher will be pivotal in building a thriving foundation program at Durham Nativity School. They will be responsible for:
- Curriculum and Instruction:
- Develop and deliver engaging and effective lesson plans aligned with national standards across all core subjects (English language arts, math, science, and social studies).
- Utilize a variety of instructional strategies to cater to different learning styles and ensure all students reach their full potential.
- Integrate technology effectively to enhance the learning experience.
- Design and administer formative and summative assessments to monitor student progress and inform instruction using NWEA MAP Growth assessments and IXL.
- Foster a love of reading and writing by providing a rich and stimulating literacy environment.
- Classroom Management:
- Create a positive and inclusive classroom environment that promotes respect, collaboration, and a love of learning.
- Implement effective classroom management strategies to foster a productive learning environment.
- Clearly communicate expectations and provide constructive feedback to students.
- Collaboration and Communication:
- Collaborate with colleagues to develop and implement a cohesive curriculum across grade levels.
- Communicate effectively with parents/guardians regarding student progress and school activities.
- Build strong relationships with students, families, and colleagues.
- Student Support:
- Lead an advisory group of 10-12 students, providing academic, social, and emotional support.
- Foster a positive learning environment that celebrates the unique strengths and contributions of all students.
- General responsibilities:
- Attend and actively participate in all faculty and staff meetings.
- Attend programmatic school events (e.g. Back to School, Christmas program, Commencement, etc.) and proctor exams.
- Participate in professional development opportunities that support personal and programmatic growth.
Qualifications:
- Commitment to celebrating, amplifying, and uplifting our young men.
- Has an entrepreneurial spirit and a desire to build a program.
- Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education, or a related field (Master's degree preferred).
- Strong understanding of learner-centered pedagogy.
- Passion for project-based learning, hands-on activities, and authentic assessments.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

Pay: $40,000.00 - $46,000.00 per year
