Primary Purpose:
Plan, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive program of guidance to the school assigned,
including counseling services. Provide a proactive developmental guidance program to
encourage all students to maximize personal growth and development.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
Master's degree
Valid Texas counseling certificate
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of counseling procedures, student appraisal, career development, dual credit, and
college entrance requirements
Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior
Master schedule knowledge/experience preferred
Experience:
Three years of teaching experience
High School Counselor experience preferred
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Guidance:
1. Teach school developmental guidance curriculum to students.
2. Help teachers incorporate guidance-related information into the existing curriculum.
3. Provide guidance to individuals and groups of students to develop education plans and
career awareness.
4. Counsel individuals and small groups.
5. Prepare and promote a college and career readiness culture.
Consultation:
6. Consult parents, teachers, administrators, and other relevant people to enhance their
work with students.
7. Work with school personnel and school district residents to obtain resources for students.
8. Use an effective referral process to help students and others use special programs and
services.
Early College High School Responsibilities
9. Understand the criteria and process for dual credit enrollment, alignment of school and
college courses as well as how to transcript credits
10. Understand the TSI assessment, provide support for students, to include test-taking
strategies, and share information with teachers
11. Collaborate with higher education partners to develop individualized degree plans.
12. Understand the master schedule process and work side-by-side with the Dean to
schedule students in a variety of different schedules to meet the needs of the college
pathway/endorsement
13. Assist with coordinating and interpretation of all state assessments required for
graduation as well as AP exams, TSI, PSAT, ACT, SAT, etc.
Program Management:
17. Compile, maintain, and file all required physical and computerized reports, records, and
other documents.
18. Participate in the summer bridge program for students.
19. Assist with the development of a college-going culture by supporting such activities as
college visits, career fairs, and guest speakers.
Administration:
20. Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rules,
And board policy in the guidance and counseling areas.
21. Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.
22. Maintain a positive and effective relationship with supervisors.
23. Communicate effectively with colleagues, students, and parents.
Professional:
24. Model behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible.
25. Participate in professional development to improve skills related to job assignments.
