Under immediate or general supervision performs a variety of basic maintenance, janitorial or landscaping duties in one of the City's Maintenance Divisions.
Maintenance Workers I perform routine labor; basic repair and construction; grounds maintenance and basic landscaping; and general building cleaning.
Work is completed by following clear written instructions and/or supervision, though more routine assignments can be accomplished with general supervision from directions.
More skilled duties and responsibilities are performed in a training capacity as a member of a crew under the close supervision of a more experienced employee.
About the Position
The Public Works Department has an opening for one (1) Temporary Maintenance Worker position in Waste ReSources. This temporary position will last no more than nine months. Anticipated start date is August 1st, 2024.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The essential functions of this position include but are not limited to
1. Maintenance Workers I are responsible for basic, general upkeep, repair and/or cleaning in and around city buildings, structures, and property.
2. Assist with maintenance activities performed in Public Works, Parks, Olympia Center, and City facilities.
3. Perform basic pruning, fertilizing and transplanting; brush and litter removal; operation of tractors, hand/power mowers, edgers and fertilizer application devices; and may be trained on specialized equipment.
4. Assists with street repairs and winter sanding operations; shoveling various materials; operate hand/power tools; and other basic street maintenance.
5. Drives pickup and dump truck; and operate roller, paving machines, back hoe or street sweeper.
6. Assists with street signs and markings, guard rail, curbing and sidewalk repairs.
7. Assists in digging ditches and laying sewer/water/stormwater pipe; cleaning and checking valves; monitoring pumps for proper operation; and maintenance hole and pavement repairs.
8. Punctual, regular and reliable attendance is essential for successful job performance.
TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
1. Knowledge of basic building, landscaping or building maintenance techniques.
2. Knowledge of basic safety procedures and precautions.
3. Skill in operating and maintaining small manual/power tools and equipment.
4. Ability to perform strenuous physical activity.
5. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
6. Ability to work as a member of a crew.
7. Ability to respond to citizen inquiries appropriately.
Experience/Education
1. One year's general work experience required.
2. Experience in specialty area (i.e. landscaping, building maintenance, streets, etc.) preferred.
Special Requirement
1. Require a valid Washington State Drivers' License
