BEHAVIOR INTERVENTION IMPLEMENTATION (BII) SPECIALIST
FULL TIME, 181 WORKDAYS

Overview
Goethe International Charter School (GICS) is an independent charter school currently serving grades TK-8 based on the International Baccalaureate Primary
Years, International Baccalaureate Middle Years and a dual language immersion program (German/English), preparing its students for life in a global society. We are serving over 400 students in a happy, healthy, small yet academically rigorous learning environment. Our students are proud to perform on a high academic level and our team to be honored with multiple different awards over the years.
For the 2022-2023 school year we continue to co-locate with the Marina del Rey
Middle School in Del Rey. GICS strives to establish itself as the most internationally minded school choice in Los Angeles for a continued K-8 education following the
International Baccalaureate Primary and Middle Years programs. Our team currently consists of 33 members of faculty and staff, led by the Executive Director.
Function
To assist, support, and work closely with teachers, administrators, service providers, and other team members in providing educational and behavioral benefit for individual students with special education needs and to provide support to the overall classroom and campus environments.
Qualifications
- A high school diploma or equivalent and completion of 48 units at an institution of higher learning or an Associate’s (or higher) degree.
- A minimum of one (1) year working with individuals with special needs, preferably within the last five (5) years.
- Interest in assisting students with special needs in a learning environment.
- Emotional maturity and stability necessary for the specialized work involved in supporting students with behavioral challenges.
- Knowledge of basic child development as it relates to individual students with special needs.
- Basic understanding of California Common Core State Standards specific to grade level assigned.
- Knowledge of behavior management techniques and practical implementation.
- Clear communication skills, both orally and in writing: advanced knowledge of English grammar and spelling.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions.
- Awareness and sensitivity towards students and their individual differences in terms of abilities, cultures, and languages.
- Languages: English required and German preferred.
- TB and DOJ Clearance (upon offer of employment).
Certifications
- CPR and First Aid certification.
- If not current, must obtain certification while working at GICS within the first
90 days of employment.
- Must maintain current certification while employed at GICS.
Responsibilities
- Demonstrate knowledge of student’s needs, including but not limited to educational, medical, physical, sensory, speech/language, social/emotional, fine/gross motor, pre-vocational, etc., as established by the Individualized
Education Plan (IEP) team.
- Maintain strict confidentiality regarding all matters pertaining to students, personnel, and school matters.
- Demonstrate exemplary organizational skills, time management, and flexibility to meet staff and student needs.
- Reinforce instruction (individual, small group, and whole group) as directed by the classroom teacher.
- Regular and consistent attendance; arrive to school on time.
- Attend all trainings, workshops, and staff development meetings as required by the school.
- Refer questions and/or concerns from parents to appropriate personnel.
- Refrain from using personal electronic devices for purposes unrelated to assigned duties during the workday.
- Assist in the supervision of students in the classroom and outside of the classroom, during structured and unstructured activities.
- Assist in the progressive discipline and social/emotional development of assigned students according to staff direction and approved GICS discipline policies.
- Maintain professional relationships and appropriate boundaries with students, parents, staff, and other stakeholders.
- Establish a positive rapport with students, parents, staff, and other stakeholders.
- Maintain emotional control in challenging situations.
- Help facilitate inclusion of assigned student in general education setting using behavior support strategies and interventions as outlined in the IEP.
Job Duties
- Assist in the preparation of instructional materials (copy, order, arrange, or gather materials as directed) including visual aids and classroom displays.
- Participate in data collection on behaviors as part of the behavior support plan development and implementation under the direction of the Behavior
Intervention Development (BID) specialist, general education teacher, andAssistant Principal.
- Record data, case notes, and other pertinent information for input into the
Welligent system as described by the IEP on a daily basis.
- Assist teacher in maintaining an environment conducive for learning and encouraging appropriate behavior by using a consistent team approach.
- Assist teachers in carrying out positive reinforcement procedures and reactive strategies identified in the behavior support plan, such as prompting student to switch to functionally equivalent replacement behavior.
- Assist teachers in working with students who may be demonstrating excessive behaviors such as hitting, biting, scratching, running or tantrum- like behaviors.
- Work as team member and under the direction of the BID, teacher, and
Assistant Principal to support goals specified in the behavior support plan in the IEP.
- Escort, supervise, and assist student in various settings, including, but not limited to field trips, school related functions, cafeteria, recess, and general education/special classrooms including morning arrival and afternoon dismissal times as assigned by the Assistant Principal.
- Facilitate appropriate social interactions among students by prompting, modeling, and reinforcing appropriate social behaviors in group settings.
- Assist teachers in implementing lessons, or portions of lessons, to a student or group of students, check for accuracy of work, and present additional assignments as directed by the teacher.
- Take notes or scribe for students, if indicated in IEP.
- Assist and monitor students in using assistive technology devices.
- Provide ongoing basic or emergency medical assistance to students, as needed, using appropriate equipment; including, but not limited to, first aid,
CPR, and emergency injections (i.e. epi-pens)
- Complete reports and records, such as accident and incident reports, as needed.
- Assist in bathroom transition supervision.
- Diligently monitor student safety during recess and lunch as assigned by
Assistant Principal.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
