SUMMARY
Assists in the evaluation of the physical and mental health of incarcerated patients. Collaborates with medical and County Jail staff to coordinate appropriate patient care.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Reports directly to the Health Services Administrator; also takes direction from the Jail Administrator and County Sheriff.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Duties may include but not limited to the following:
- Administers medications in accordance with applicable policies and procedures;
- Makes appropriate referrals for continued and/or higher level of care;
- Completes diagnostic testing when ordered and communicates results with appropriate provider;
- Assists the health care practitioner in the clinic or during minor medical/surgical procedures as needed;
- Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN), assists in the evaluation of the physical and mental health of incarcerated patients;
- Communicates concerns regarding patient safety and behavior to appropriate personnel;
- Maintains medical records for each inmate housed in the Washington County Jail;
- Prepare required Uniform Health Status Update for transferred inmates;
- Provide emergency lifesaving measures and treat trauma related injuries;
- Ensures that all patient care provided falls within the scope of practice as dictated by Jail commission rules and Departmental policies;
- Work closely with all jail personnel, local hospitals, pharmacies, local and regional mental health professionals, Emergency Medical Services and other health service providers.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Graduate of an accredited Vocational/Practical Nursing School or Program and successfully passed the NCLEX examination.
Preferred QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Two or more years of experience in a medical setting;·
- One or more of the certifications listed above.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to obtain a working knowledge of the regulations and policies set forth by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement, Texas Commission on Jail Standards, and any other related state statues;
- Ability to obtain a working knowledge of applicable Washington County and Sheriff’s Office policies and procedures;
- Ability to obtain a working knowledge needed to use basic word processing software and Jail Management System.
- Ability to comply with related federal, state and local laws.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to operate in a work environment and conditions which involve responding to emergency situations, working closely with others, irregular work hours, exposure to bodily fluids and to effectively manage situations of personal danger which may include exposure to dangerous persons and communicable diseases.
- Effective interpersonal and public relations skills.
- Ability to prepare official documents required to perform assigned functions including but not limited to: forms, affidavits, incident reports, and inmate processing documents.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES & REGISTRATIONS
- Valid Texas Driver’s License
- Licensed Vocational Nurse.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must be able to spend long amounts of time standing and walking; may be required to run in response to an emergency;
- Required to carry equipment and/or push a medical cart;
- Often required to bend, kneel, or twist;
- Must be able to lift at least 30 pounds;
- Visual and auditory acuity sufficient to operate related equipment.
WORKING CONDITIONS

- Conditions may involve and/or responding to emergency situations, working closely with others, irregular work hours, exposure to bodily fluids and to effectively deal with personal danger which may include exposure to dangerous persons and communicable diseases.
- The employee has frequent contact with other employees in the assigned department and may be required to interact with employees outside of the department, and must remain calm and professional in tense, emotionally charged, and stressful situations. The employee is constantly required to change tasks frequently and to perform tedious exacting work. The employee may face difficult and stressful situations and may be required to work under time pressures to meet deadlines, to perform multiple tasks simultaneously, and to work closely with others as part of a team. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
- The employee will be expected to act in case of an emergency or trauma. The employee will be able to administer CPR, bag ventilation, and the AED along with other life safety techniques without hesitation.
