GENERAL SUMMARY:
Plans, coordinates and directs the activities of groups of workers within the same department who are engaged in providing City utility services.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS-
Organizes and assigns the work of utility crews: monitors work in progress

Ensure that employees have adequate work supplies and properly functioning equipment to perform assigned tasks.

Analyze and resolve staff, equipment and operating problems and recommend changes to increase efficiency.

Prepare, coordinate, update, and/or refer work orders to the appropriate entity.

Creates work orders for every job that will be performed by your direct reports, review each work order to ensure completeness and accuracy with minimal errors.

Monitor and evaluate work crews' performance daily.

Reviews operations policies and procedures; recommends changes to increase efficiency and implements approved changes.

Trains new employees.

Oversees preventive maintenance of assigned vehicles, equipment, and tools.

Provides leadership to subordinates and motivational tools needed to promote growth within the organization.
WORKING CONDITIONS
The position routinely requires lifting moderately heavy items (up to 40 pounds) and very long periods of walking on rough surfaces on a routine basis. There is routine exposure to inclement weather conditions.
This is a Department of Houston Public Works at the Tier 1 Level.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Basic knowledge of grammar, spelling, punctuation, and simple mathematical functions like percentages, ratios, etc. as might normally be acquired through the attainment of a High School diploma or GED.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Four (4) years of progressively responsible work experience in the maintenance field is required.
A Bachelor's degree in a related field may be substituted for the experience requirement.
LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
May require a valid Texas Class "C" driver's license and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving.
Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.**

However, the department may administer a skills assessment test.

Factors used in determining the salary offered include the candidate's qualifications as well as the pay rates of other employees in this classification.
