Summary:
The Permit Technician will perform technical administrative work in support of the Building Safety Division within the Planning and Development Service Department. This position will process building permit application submittals, assist the public with application tracking, and inspection requirements, provide information to customers regarding contractor licensing, maintain files, and provide general support to the Building Safety Division, including performing code and records research and compiling data. Key responsibilities of this position include completing a variety of clerical and technical tasks and duties related to the keeping and processing of building and contractor licensing applications. This position will also perform limited technical building and trade code review of building permit plans, engineering documents and other permit documents for compliance with adopted building codes and other related city codes. This position may also assist Plans Examiners in review of more complex building permit projects as needed. This position uses architectural and engineering scales to determine dimensions and calculate building areas and percentages. The Permit Technician position receives general supervision from the Deputy Code Official and the Code Official.
Qualifications:
High School equivalent required, supplemented by specialized training in construction technology, code enforcement or a related field with experience in providing administrative support is preferred. Must have the ability to multi-task in an extremely high-volume work environment. Requires strong knowledge of and proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and the ability to learn permit and licensing software programs. The ideal candidate will have excellent written and verbal communication skills with great attention to detail. The candidate selected for this position must possess excellent telephone skills, with the ability to resolve customer concerns in a highly professional manner. Must possess or be able to obtain certification as a Permit Technician through the International Code Council within eighteen months of date of hire. Possession of or ability to obtain an additional certification as a Residential Building Inspector or Residential Plans Examiner through the International Code Council within 24 months of hire date preferred. The successful candidate must pass a background check, post-offer City physical and drug screen. Position open until filled.
