TEMPORARY MAINTENANCE WORKER
The Maintenance Worker I position is a temporary position, and hours worked may not exceed 1,000 hour per fiscal year. This position does not offer benefits.
Under direct supervision, on an intermittent basis, performs a variety of semi-skilled or unskilled tasks in the maintenance and servicing of City streets, sewers, beaches, parks, trees, facilities, and equipment; performs related duties as required. The position is an entry level temporary position supporting the City’s Public Works Department by performing routine semi-skilled or unskilled maintenance and repair tasks in and around the City. Most assignments are performed without detailed instructions as to specific procedures to be followed. The Temporary Maintenance Worker I position is a FLSA non-exempt, hourly position and limited to 1000 hours per fiscal year. No benefits are associated with this position.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

- Uses power and hand tools to edge, spray, and weed parks, rights-of-ways, and grounds, flower beds, and other landscaped areas; prunes or trims hedges, trees, and shrubs.
- Assists with cleaning and raking the beaches with a tractor and/or beach cleaner; cleans out fire rings; repairs and maintains showers and drinking fountains.
- Cleans walks, parking areas, and other areas of leaves and debris; dumps trash cans; cleans rest rooms; performs or assists in routine or preventive maintenance of park and beach facilities.
- Operates a variety of equipment or vehicles; makes minor repairs such as sharpening blades; performs routine vehicle maintenance and equipment safety inspections.
- Cleans storm drains and catch basins; replaces and repairs signs; repairs and builds fences; removes graffiti; performs weed abatement tasks.
- Assists in special projects such as repairing restrooms and fixtures; periodic painting; installing sprinkler systems; equipment set-up and other physical arrangements.
- Wears protective apparel including goggles, face protector, noise insulators, and safety shoes; sits, stands, walks, kneels, crouches, stoops, squats, twists, climbs, lifts 60 lbs., and pushes or pulls objects up to 100 lbs.; ability to be exposed to inclement weather and conditions including cold, heat, noise, outdoors, vibration, chemicals, and mechanical and electrical hazards; travels to different sites and locations.
- Operates vehicles and equipment.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience: One year of experience in grounds, street, and/or parks maintenance.
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.

Physical Examination and Background Check: Employment offers are conditional based, upon the successful completion of a medical examination which includes drug screening and a Department of Justice background check. Physicals are performed by the City's designated physician at the City's expense.
Tuberculosis (TB) Testing: Candidates selected to work in this position perform work covered under the Aerosol Transmissible Disease Standard (ATD), such as servicing ventilation systems or other equipment reasonably anticipated to contain aerosol transmitted pathogens, they likely have occupational exposures and are specifically covered by the ATD Standard. Upon hire, candidate must submit a certificate or notice documenting that within the last two years they have been examined and found to be free of communicable tuberculosis (TB). The certificate or notice must be signed by a licensed examining physician or public health agency. If this certificate is not available, candidate will be tested during their pre-employment physical examination process.
California Driver's License: Employees in classifications requiring possession of a valid California driver's license will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice program, which confirms possession of a valid driver's license and reflects the driving record.
