Title: Vice President of Development and Communications
Report to: Chief Executive Officer

Job Summary: Under general guidance of the CEO, the Vice President of Development and Communications serves as a member of the leadership team at Community Smiles Dental responsible for fund development, strategic partnerships and communications. The Vice President of Development and Communications plays a critical leadership role addressing the priorities and needs of Community Smiles Dental internally and externally in the community.
Major Responsibility Areas:
- Supports mission, vision and core values of Community Smiles Dental emphasizing strategy in development and communication efforts that further the sustainability of the organization and brand as a nonprofit in the Greater Milwaukee area.
- Maintains strong and positive working and interpersonal relationships with all employed at Community Smiles Dental including interns, externs and volunteers.
- Positively contributes to a highly inclusive culture where all team members can thrive and represent CSD's core values to the best of their abilities.
- Model the behaviors and competencies as a leader to create a positive, professional environment that reflects the values of the organization.
- Supports strategic initiatives surrounding organizational and team member development in collaboration with the Vice President of Operations.
- Understands and is able to comply with all employment policies and procedures defined by Community Smiles Dental.
- Performs duties and responsibilities under the following major responsibility areas: development and communications.
- In the area of Development:
- Works with the CEO and leadership team to implement a comprehensive partnership strategy to grow interest and involvement in our mission with existing and new donors and partners.
- Develop and lead the organization’s fund development strategy to meet the needs of the organization financially.
- Responsible for a portfolio of major donors to manage and grow their relationship with Community Smiles Dental.
- Oversee all fund development functions in the areas of donor acquisition, grants, annual fund, donor prospecting, special events, donor stewardship, major gifts, planning gifts, and donor data management/analysis.
- Responsible for budget preparation and management in the areas of contributed revenue and expenses for fund development, marketing, strategic partnerships, and the associated team members.
- Work closely with the Board of Directors and advise Board Members to take an active role in fund development.
- In partnership with the Fund Development Committee Chair, drive the strategy and direction of the board’s contribution and engagement in fund development.
- Develop strategy for and manage all special fundraising campaigns to support the organization’s strategic needs, including capital, non-endowment, and special initiatives.
- Manage all contracted services relative to fund development and special events.
- Be visible as a representative of Community Smiles Dental by actively participating in community events, leadership groups, boards, etc.
- Lead and direct the Executive Leadership Council (ELC), including recruiting new members and developing partnerships through the council.
- In the area of Communications:
- Lead and implement the organization’s strategic plan initiatives in the areas of communications.
- Design and lead the communications strategy for the organization, branding, storytelling, messaging, including public relations, paid marketing, earned media, digital and social marketing, print collateral, and merchandise.
- Manage direct mail and newsletter programs.
- Responsible for all communications strategy and collateral for organization events.
- Manage all contracted services relative to communication responsibilities.
- Manage media and press relationships.
- Oversee crisis communication strategies for the organization.

Minimum Requirements
- Completion of a bachelor’s degree in business management, communication, marketing, community or nonprofit leadership or related field.
- Minimum of 3 years of progressively responsible fund development experience performing the duties as described above.
- Prior successful management experience. Demonstrated successful experience in securing major gifts/planned giving, fundraising and developing donor relationships.
- Strong communication and decision-making skills.
- Excellent writing, analytical, and research skills.
- Strong project management skills.
- Proficiency in the use of Google and Microsoft Office Suites.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Excellent prioritization skills.
Preferred Requirements
- Completion of an MBA or master’s degree in nonprofit management or related field.
- CFRE certification.

- Ability to work in an environment with frequent moderate to high noise levels.
- Ability to work in close proximity with other team members and patients.
