The School Counselor provides professional guidance and counseling services to assist in creating a learning environment that promotes student success.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Master’s Degree required.
- Hold a Michigan Teaching Certificate with a Guidance Counselor (NT) Endorsement OR a School Guidance Counselor License issued by the Michigan Department of Education (MDE)
- Completion of a Michigan Department of Education (MDE) mandated clock hour internship with school-aged pupils under the supervision of a person who is a counselor educator in an approved counseling program. At least half of the mandated clock hours shall be in a school setting.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide preventative services and respond to identified student needs by implementing a comprehensive school counseling program that addresses academic, career and personal/Social development for all students.
- Collaborate effectively with parents/guardians, teachers, administrators and other educational/community resources regarding students with identified concerns and needs.
- Conduct individual and group counseling sessions to students with identified concerns and needs.
- Coordinate ongoing systemic activities designed to assist students in establishing personal goals and developing future plans.
- Concentrate on academic achievement, career development, personal-social effectiveness and psychological maturity of students while facilitating professional tasks.
- Provide responsive services designed to meet students’ immediate needs and concerns. Responsive services may include counseling in individual or small-group settings or crisis response.
- Provide indirect services on behalf of students as a result of the school counselors’ interactions with others including referrals for additional assistance, consultation and collaboration with parents, teachers, other educators and community organizations.
- Coordinate guidance activities with other school staff personnel, business/labor industry, community foundations/organizations and other local resources.
- Counsel students individually and in small groups on a regularly scheduled basis.
- Use available Technology/community resources to enhance school counseling program.
- Monitor student activities when appropriate
- Implement an effect referral and follow-up process
- Appropriately guide students in developing goals based on individual data and other relevant information.
- Identify cases involving domestic abuse or other family problems affecting students’ development.
- Research and provide special services such as alcohol and drug prevention programs and classes that teach students how to handle conflicts without resorting to violence.
- Provide assistance with conflict resolution and crisis intervention to students when difficult situations occur at school or home.
- Encourage parents/students to seek additional assistance from outside mental health agencies, when necessary.
- Observe children in classroom and play activities to gain additional information about them.
- Observe and evaluate student’s performance, behavior, social development and physical health.
- Serve on the School Improvement Team as needed and participate in other staff development activities.
- Performs other related duties as assigned by Principal or designee.

Pay: $50,000.00 - $76,000.00 per year
