Quality control (QC) personnel, also known as quality control inspectors (QCIs), are responsible for ensuring that products meet quality standards and specifications before, during, and after manufacturing. They work with quality auditors to inspect, test, and measure products and materials, and compare the results to guidelines and requirements. QCIs may also recommend adjustments to the production process and follow up on updates to prevent future defects.
QCIs document their findings in test reports, which include measurements, observations, and any defects. They then notify supervisors and help analyze and correct production issues.
QCIs may need to have specific skills and knowledge depending on the type of product they are inspecting. For example, an inspector might need to know food safety standards, USDA grade standards, or have production inspection skills. Other responsibilities may include being organized, having problem-solving skills, and being able to work independently. With experience, QCIs may move into senior specialist positions and manage teams of other QCIs.
They may also take professional development courses or earn certifications, such as Six Sigma or Certified Quality Inspector.
