Controller with a PE-backed boutique real estate firm.

Summary
The firm acquires, develops, and manages commercial real estate projects nationally. The ideal Controller will be a hands-on accountant with experience in rapidly-scaling environments and will also have strong FP&A skills and experience creating budgets and forecasts that executive management can use to make strategic decisions as well as experience in the real estate industry.
This CFO-track role is the ideal role for a strong accounting leader who has an entrepreneurial spirit and a desire to impact both the day-to-day operations and strategy of a growing company.
Responsibilities
- Continues to develop and supervise the staff of the finance / accounting group, including managing the accounting and reporting aspects of the property management groups; interfacing with third party property managers, and managing the financial reporting aspects of the asset management group.
- Provides oversight and leadership to property accounting teams: coaches and mentors team members on achieving goals and developing necessary skills that drive results; Identifies team goals and evaluates team progress; oversees hiring.
- Oversees investor financial reporting for the portfolio and ensures financial deliverable requirements and fiduciary duty are met by the investment management team(s); interfacing with investors and advisors as required on financial reporting and investment performance matters.
- Oversees accounting, reporting, cash management, distributions / capital calls, as well as annual tax filing and compliance for the existing fund (as well as future funds), in conjunction with an outsourced fund administrator.
- Coordinates annual financial audits, operating cost audits, and income and other tax planning, filing and compliance, and works with property managers to prepare and analyze budgets for the properties under management.
- Evaluates, maintains, and implements appropriate accounting policies and procedures, as well as accounting staffing plans. Works with investors and clients to implement their required policies and procedures into existing systems.
- Directly responsible for establishment of accounting practices and accounting teams for each new investment, including establishment of initial chart of accounts and hiring property accountants.
- Occasional responsibility for direct property accounting needs, including daily GL activities, distributions and cash management.
- Supports property, project and asset management in financial planning and budgetary processes.
- Ensures that all accounting records and reports are maintained timely, accurately, and in accordance with investor requirements and applicable policies and procedures.
- Oversees project level and fund / investment ownership level financial reporting to Asset and Investment Management team(s) including: performance data, cash flow tracking, debt, guarantee covenants and other information as needed.
- Prepares quarterly and annual consolidated financial statements as part of the full reports for investor reporting in accordance with investor and/or fund reporting requirements.
- Assists the Asset Management and Property Management team(s) in the analyzing and preparation of annual budgets for each of the properties and for the Company.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Accounting.
- CPA required.
- 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, with current or prior public accounting experience preferred.
- At least 3 years in a managerial role.
- Prior experience with real estate acquisitions.
- Experience with a PE-backed, rapidly-scaling company preferred.
- Proficiency with MS Excel and Word.
- Experience working with Yardi.
